Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber: Mystery Sonata "Resurrection"

Unusually, Biber requires the violin strings to be retuned (called scordatura) for his Resurrection Sonata: instead of G D' A' E, now G G' D''; this means that the strings must be crossed behind the bridge and in the pegbox. The third string therefore sounds lower than the second. But the two octaves in fifths produce a magnificent resonance that symbolically points to the fullness of life and the reality of resurrection. The crossed strings also indicate that suffering and pain are also significant for the reality of resurrection. The sonata has three movements, each of which approaches the expanded view of reality known as 'resurrection' in a different way.

Beethoven Piano Sonata No 15, Op 28 (Pastorale) Annie Fischer

Not clear that Beethoven approved the designation "pastorale." The first movement is generally calm, building tension in the development section. The second (slow) movement is a tertiary form, almost like a menuetto and trio. The minor key A section features a perpetual staccato bass, and B section is in major key. The return of the A section is much ornamented and embellished. The Scherzo is brief and the final Rondo congenial. Beautifully performed by Annie Fischer.
Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

The Circle Canon is probably by Johann Joachim Quantz. In both the Canon and the Gulliver Suite, the second violin is performed by the Akadamie's concertmaster, Bernhard Forck.

I've been listening to the  CDs of secular music, I'll try the sacred music this week probably. One thing I felt was that it was superbly well recorded. And another was that while some of the songs were a bit generic, anonymous, some of them were far from that. My ears really pricked up on Donna poss'io sperare

Oh, I have made φασολάδα - with real Greek beans no less  - following Sotiris Evaggelou's video.  In fact that was a revelation because of the way he asked me to add olive oil towards the end of the cooking process. I never expected that. Delicious.

Revisiting some performances of Bruckner's Eighth Symphony, in preparation for hosting a Bruckner fan who loves the symphonies but has never heard this one. Still want to query him about conductors and orchestras he enjoys. (E.g., "I can't stand Karajan!" ;D )

This one, from 2019 with Manfred Honeck and the WDR Sinfonieorchester, is a prime candidate.

Having spent the afternoon with a more or less imaginary medieval musician, I will spend some of the evening with a real medieval musician.

CD 3, the first of two devoted to his secular works.  He seems to have composed both text and music for most, if not all, of these songs.
