Spotted Horses

Bach's Prelude and Fugue in A minor is a miracle! Crossland is very satisfying.

Beethoven Piano Sonata No 22, Op 54.

Maybe I am missing something, but what a turd!

Formerly Scarpia (Scarps), Baron Scarpia, Ghost of Baron Scarpia, Varner, Ratliff, Parsifal, perhaps others.

Seems like I should listen to some Mennin. I think I once listened to a symphony recorded by Mercury Living Presence.

That would have been the Fifth, the Eastman Rochester Orchestra led by Howard Hanson. It's been a while, let me revisit that recording.

IIRC both Mennin & Piston were of Italo-American families, so it's almost like, with Giannini, Flagello, Dello Gioio, Persichetti, Mennin & Piston, 20th-c. Italian music in diaspora.

I've never heard of Giannini!

One of my very favourite versions of this evergreen score.

#139696

Symphony no 5, written just after WWII ended. Not exactly tragic but still sombre, melancholy stuff.

Symphony no 12, as per the notes is supposed to be 'optimistic'. To my ears it sounds like the optimism of Honegger's 2nd and 3rd symphonies: an optimistic grimness, a joyful despair maybe ? Not gloom and doom, but a driven, angular romp.

The part of Bach's works that is perhaps least known but most enjoyable. I have them as part of my complete Bach sets (Hanssler and Teldec).
