Alexander Kastalsky (1856-1926) 'Requiem for Fallen Brothers' (1914-17)
An impressive, deeply-felt and moving work.

That release caught my attention. Good to hear you enjoyed it, Jeffrey!

That's my favorite symphony by him. I find the No. 2 more impenetrable and elusive.

I don't recall finding No. 2 as "difficult" as you do...I enjoyed it very much! ;)

Shostakovich: 9th Symphony.

Superb recording. The excellence of Decca still has the power to surprise.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Katyn Epitaph

Absolutely touching piece. What a gem.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

Vaughan Williams: Three Shakespeare Songs

RIAS Kammerchor, Marcus Creed

What gorgeous songs these are! Particularly the first two. And gorgeously performed I must say. They sound rather unlike any other VW I know in some ways, but Wiki (below*) informs me of a connection with the Sixth Symphony which I do know a bit, but can't remember it being quite as transporting as these. High time though to renew my acquaintance with it, from the Handley Cfp set which I have.

Salonen and the beautifully honed LAPO give a performance that is pastoral rather than rustic, well-behaved rather than boisterous or burly. For Mahler in stormy weather mode, there are a number of alternatives. For an unusually iridescent and thoughtful interpretation Salonen is the ticket. Beautiful sound, with the posthorn solo (trumpet here, I think) perfectly balanced.

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No.7 in E major. Daniel Barenboim, Berlin Philharmonic

Love this performance...

I know. I clicked on CD&Vinyl before clicking on the album link, which was apparently still to Amazon Digital Music. Loved the performance of Symphony No. 1 though - has me eagerly anticipating listening to No. 2.

I suspect that you'd enjoy it Kyle. The old Russian Disc recording is on You Tube.

After the Kopatchinskaja Vivaldi disaster, it was heartening to discover some really exciting symphonic music:

Good to see it's on Spotify already too.

There is of course a good deal of virtuoso display in these works, but also a good deal of emotional heft that Hamelin makes sure to bring out.

Recommended.
