Mozart: The Marriage of Figaro, Acts 3 & 4 [Busch]

As a 1934 performance the sound is very good and the singing [to my ear] is very pleasant from all concerned. The speeds are also quite brisk and I do enjoy the performance with its good sense of drama.

One of my favorites from RVW and this performance is remarkably good.

Vivaldi: Concerto for Lute and Strings [Bream]

Starting in on this set again with disc one.  The world needs more Prokofiev playing of at least this stature.
The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

He outFeldmans Feldman! In 5 minutes as opposed to 5 hours.

Chopin: Mazurka in A minor "Notre Temps", played by Marian Mika.

The rest of the disc, with other works of Chopin, will follow, no doubt.
(Brilliant Classics 93202/13)

And I surely hope that "notre temps" on GMG will be better soon... without spies, hackers, bots and all that shit.

The first time I've been in this thread and seen, 4.00 p.m. in London - Mandryka and 0 guests viewing this topic. The ghost town feeling is fine by me personally.

Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 [Bohm]

The opening movement is suitably light and buoyant. One can almost see the heat haze emanating from the second movement in its evocation of a balmy summer's day. The merrymaking scene is light and bright and just boisterous enough. The storm scene is quite good, bordering on the ferocious. The final movement is suitably lyrical and soulful. Speeds are well judged throughout.

Morning listening, Schubert 3 & 4, followed by the Engligh Suites.... all while starting some Dickens (Bleak House).

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

That is a marvellous CD of VW's chamber music. 'The Lake in the Mountains' and the late Violin Sonata are particular favourites although I enjoy every work on that CD. The SQ No.2 is very impressive.

Best performance of the Five Mystical Songs known to me.

First listen, from the new big box.  It sounds pretty much exactly like I figured it would sound.  The transfer of the 1949 source material is fabulous.  I hope this portends good things for the box as a whole.

I'm thinking a new Fantasie shootout may be warranted.

A bit of Haydn today.

Joseph Haydn: Piano Concerto No.4 in G major. Leif Ove Andsnes conducting the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra from the piano. A great performance I think. Brisk and refreshing music.

Joseph Haydn: Die Schöpfung. Leonard Bernstein, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Wow, what a piece. Just listening to bits and pieces today, I'll have to dedicate some time and hear the whole thing sometime soon.
