Something that couldn't possibly be put into words, so I won't even try. (Yes, this is a copout answer, but it's true.)

The answer is in the silence between the E flat major chords at the start of the Eroica symphony.

Leonin - Sacred Music, 12th Century Paris performed by Red Byrd. Re-watching Robert Greenberg's How to Listen to and Understand Great Music, 3rd Edition and just finished the third talk on the 'Middle Ages' - Leonin was probably the first composer known by name, i.e. all previous ones being anonymous; so, thought that I'd listen to the only discs of his music that I own - quite relaxing w/ the morning coffee!  8)  Dave

Wanted to follow your example, but I do not have these in my collection and forgot that Spotify doesn't carry Hyperion recordings.. .

Anyway, it did come up with this:

NP: Duruflé Requiem, Op. 9 (Duruflé et. al.)

I've yet to hear a better performance of this Requiem (the Matthew Best performance on Hyperion gets very close and used to be my reference until I heard this one). Anyway, this is really something and is a more forceful performance than many of the others I've heard. I suppose this is how the composer envisioned it as he's on the podium.
As with your Martinu Apex CD John that is another classic recording - one of the best of Durufle's Requiem, although I also like Michel Legrand's recording.

Lehar's charming last operetta.

Walton: Violin Concerto.

Chung can over-egg the pudding but with the Walton concerto perhaps a good thing as I cannot recall enjoying the work as much. This, along with Prokofeiv 2 (again Previn) are Chung's best recordings in my view.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Lehar's charming last operetta.

Yes a fine work, a pity that I do not like Rothenberger's voice. she belongs to a generation of coloratura soprano's that are different in their approach as say Erna Berger or Erika Köth, one of my favourite coloratura soprano's. Her voice is as clear as a bell, and no vibrato, or hardly.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

I don't know that recording - so, one to investigate, although I much prefer the Viola Concerto, which I think is the greater work.

Have you ever heard/watched her performance of Bartok's second violin concerto with her brother conducting?  It's from 1984.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JzRkXBV61Q
