I really enjoyed this the 1st time, so up for a another run.  :)

Alfred Schnittke: Seid nüchtern und wachet (Faust Cantata). James DePreist, Malmö Symphony Chorus & Orchestra

Brilliant vocal music from Alfred Schnittke, almost a semi-opera. Very good performance from the Malmöites under the late maestro DePreist.

Franz Lachner.

Symphony No. 6 in D major.
Concertino for Bassoon & Orchestra in E flat major.

Evergreen SO, Gernot Schmalfuss.
Chia-Hua Hsu, Bassoon.

For me a success in another release by this composer. I hope CPO keeps the flow up, for there is still a lot of music by him that needs to be released. The sixth symphony is a wonderful work, especially the third movement which has a haunting melody, repeated in many orchestral variations, with very impressive scoring.
The bassoon concertino is a must for every lover of this instrument. The recording is quite good, detailed, a super front to back acoustic, and no smearing of timpani and basses, very spatial indeed. The performance is without blemish.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Well, somebody around here has to pay them some attention  ;)

Jaromir Weinberger.

Orchestral Works.

From the Opera "Schwanda, the Bagpiper".
Bohemian Songs and Dances 1-6.
Overture "The beloved Voice".

Deutsche-Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland Pfalz, Karl Steffens.

The first thing that should be mentioned is the spectacular sound Holger Urbach conjured out of his magic box, but then again, I never heard a recording by him that was not up to snuff.
Schwanda is probably the best work Weinberger every wrote, only this work would warrant the modest outlay for this disc. Well scored and always using the max in resources available to him. Not a boring moment at all. The Bohemian Songs and Dances are a dreamlike journey through many different moods, well captured in the score. I am pleased with the music and recording alike, and it is well performed too.

Good? Theo Olof is a violinist I admire. On vinyl he is collectable and expensive.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Dyson: Symphony in G.

On first hearing I wasn't impressed. The third movement (a set of variations) and finale is a mess as I thought at the time. The mist has cleared and now I rate the symphony highly. Perseverance paid off. Took two CDs to swing it, after pretty extensive listening prefer the urgent Lloyd-Jones to the more upholstered Hickox.
