Hesperion XXI, Jordi Savall.

A invigorating journey through cultures and its music.  Savall makes it a feast to lavish in. Excellent SACD sound.

Music between Orient and Occident
"High Gate" was the name given to the entrance gate to the public part of the Sultan's Palace in Istanbul, which also housed the official residence of the Grand Vizier and thus the government of the Ottoman Empire. Foreign envoys from all over the world were received here in pompous ceremonies.

Following his CD "Istanbul", Jordi Savall is now following in the footsteps of the vocal tradition of the Ottoman Empire and the Armenian and Jewish diasporas. In addition to his ensemble Hespèrion XXI, Savall has invited an elite group of Turkish musicians, specialists in the musical traditions of their homeland, for his new journey to the border between Orient and Occident.

FonoForum 03/12: "The result is music whose rhythmic urgency rhythmic urgency, beguiling repetition Its rhythmic urgency, beguiling repetition patterns and strangely exotic sound systems The 'voice of Istanbul' does not only include the Turkish Voice of Istanbul' does not only include Turkish, but also Armenian Armenian, Hebrew and Sephardic traditions
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

I'm going to be honest here and say that all of the Philip Glass I've heard so far hasn't done much for me. I liked his Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3 pretty well, but I think that overall his later work is dull. I'm going to keep trying and I don't regret buying recordings of his music, but so far there hasn't been any musical rewards.

Schumann's Cello Concerto is actually quite a frequently performed work amongst cellists today. Myself and most of my cellist colleagues have all learned the work at some point. I used to not like it very much, but it's grown on me quite a bit recently.

Nice!

A superb set, indeed. 8) You should definitely check out Boulez's earlier recordings on Columbia as well. They're smoking hot.

Also, you can resize images by doing by adding height=430 in the insert image code, which is [img]. It should look like this: [img height=430].

Loeffler: A Pagan Poem, Op 35 - Leopold Stokowski and his Symphony Orchestra - from the Urania album mentioned above. There are no notes so I have no idea what is 'pagan' about the piece. The only other Loeffler I have is the symphonic poem La mort de Tintagiles.

I have all the other works in the album but looking forward to hearing them from Stokowski.

I am now acting upon the curiosity which hath been piqued:

Metacosmos by the Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir....wow!  You can watch the complete performance here:

Really enjoyed the excerpt that I heard earlier of her work entitled Aiōn.  Excerpt is also available on her website (see above).  Can't find a complete recording of it though.  It's been performed but I don't know whether or not anyone has released it?
