Leo Hassler.

Complete Organ Works.
CD I.

Manuel Tomadin plays on a anonymous XII century organ at the Santa Catherina Church in Comunanza.
Pitch: ? . Temperament: ? There have been unspecified changes to the instrument by a G. Fideli & O. Cioccolani, (1858)

This organ sounds a bit too big for the likes of Leo Hassler, and the sound that comes back at your ears is a bit hard. And before you all start to say that it is not so, remember its my personal opinion, and my ears tell me so. The Contrabassi 16+8+4 (Pedale) sounds a bit cluttered.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

A very accomplished, actually top-notch, performance of Albéniz's Iberia by Jean-François Heisser.

Ibert: under the very able baton of Jarvi

Hommage a Mozart: A short but buoyant and suitably singing work

Bacchanale: The work is suitably raucous, animated and exuberant. It also has a thrilling constant drive to it until all collapse in a stupor and stagger about for a while. However, something of a second wind is recaptured and the staggering becomes more animated. The scoring for the brass is wonderful.

This looks like a nice set, Rafael. I have been considering buying it myself, but still remain on the fence as I have so much of this repertoire already. Of course, this hasn't stopped me before. ;) And a good day to you.

Yes I remember noticing that the organ at the start is not as impressive as some of them later on.  This is what I wrote, though I must say I haven't been back to relisten to the 4th tone magnificat

Trying a couple of magnificats - 4th and 8th tone. Hassler is clearly author of a major cycle of magnificats.

In the 4th tone, the  playing is good, the music is good, the organ is good, and the sound engineering is OK.

In the 8th tone the playing is full of personality and (I think) good judgement; the music is exquisite and distinctive;  the organ is magnificent, I don't know what it is;  and the sound engineering is the work of a master.

Hi Fergus,
Do you mean there are other eras ?  ;D

Lesne's voice is hitting the spot very nicely.

Enjoying countertenors (Lesne at least)! That's another turn up for the books  ??? Only a few weeks ago, I was struggling with some cantatas with Scholl.

Hi, M.I.: did you realise that your profile's dates for Debussy say 1962, not 1862?
I wasn't sure if it was a deliberate joke, in the style of P.D.Q. Bach, but thought I'd mention it just in case it wasn't :)

Ah, thanks for noticing! Correction made. I probably typed it in a hurry and didn't go back to do any fact checking. ;)
