And again this fabulous fine disc.

William Wordsworth.
Orchestral Works Volume IV.
Liepaja SO, John Gibbons.

I so much enjoy this music, it honestly engenders multiple emotions while hearing Wordsworth genius. Every note speaks, every thought is laden with meaning beyond this life. A more then excellent performance, it hoovers far above our conception of life.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Bernstein Jeremiah Symphony - appropriate for these sad times I think:

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Dmitri Shostakovich.

The Symphonies.
SACD VI.
Symphony No. 8 in C minor., opus 65. (1943)
Gürzenich Orchester Koln, Dmitrij Kitajenko.

Seemed to me a good choice when I think of the Ukraine. Emotion laden, written during the WW 2, in the midst of fighting and destruction.

Shostakovich would have loathed Poepshik, (Poetin).

Thanks, I was too lazy to "do my own research".   :)

I do hope you are all right and bettering.  :-*

Started listening to my newly expanded collection in order of year of composition. 1891, 1894 Ives Variations On America (aka God Save The Queen played in a different key with each hand  :o ) and the manic The Circus Band. Followed by 1900 Schoenberg Four Songs. I like the way the piano contrasts with the soprano in this; it makes for a more interesting listen than straightforward accompaniment. Ives doesn't seem to have been able to wait another ten years to make a start on 20th Century Avant Garde. 8)

Gustav Mahler.
Symphony No. 1 in D major.
London PO, Klaus Tennstedt.

Very impressive. A marvelous broad interpretation with great detail, and excellent EMI sound. Tennstedt captures the mood in every nuance of the music, his attention and concentration is admirable.

1902-04 and I haven't yet found anything I much like here except Ives. Three songs - Judge's Walk, Walking, The Sea Of Sleep and the short instrumental Hymn.

Thank you.

I am certainly grateful for the warm interest many GMG'ers have shown me.  :)

Charles Tomlinson Griffes may have something interesting to hear from that period.
