Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Madiel

Dvorak, Symphony no.8

The flute solos alone are proof enough of the man's genius.

Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Good to see someone else flagging this release. Great disc with the highlight for me being the 'Une Fete en Ukraine: Suite for Large Orchestra'. I know it is topical for so many, but this stands alone from geopolitics as a fine piece of music.

Morning listening:

GRAMOPHONE:
Quote
This is the new Italian sound of renaissance church music: a gentle vibrato, but a wonderfully loose and relaxed sound with a kind of breathy production. In the normal four-voice Palestrina texture both the two top
voices are taken by women; but the sopranos are extremely light in their sound so they never dominate the
texture, and the altos are of that wonderful variety that I have so far heard only from Italians, with a firm and
infinitely attractive chest register that goes confidently down to a low F... the Camerata Nova bring across the spirit and the polyphonic vitality of his music with astonishing power. Considerable credit must go to Luigi Taglioni for producing such a gentle and controlled ensemble.

I'm going to do more Palestrina in the weeks ahead!  :)

Interesting!

Here:

Schumann: Nachtstücke
Ravel: Gaspard de la Nuit

Jan Lisiecki (piano)

Nachtstücke - Very interpreted. Very Interesting. The most alluring slow central section to the third piece I think I've ever heard.

Gaspard - Technically brilliant and nuanced performance with which I didn't really connect. The substance to surface ratio felt a little lacking to me.

Yes that is also the highlight for me on this disc. I alerted Jeffrey (van der Molen) also in regards to this disc and he has to my knowledge also ordered it.

Vivaldi: Serenata a Tre [Clemencic]

This work combines all of the wonderful aspects that I find in both Vivaldi's orchestral and vocal works. Clemencic offers a very fine presentation here. The performances of the vocalists are very fine and there is also some fine violin playing to booth. It is a work that is definitely worth investigating if you do not know it.

Trying some Bach lute works on this new release:

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Barber
Hermit Songs, Op. 29
Cheryl Studer - soprano, John Browning - piano

From this set -

I'm not completely sure how I feel about Studer's performances in this set. Thomas Hampson is excellent per usual. And you couldn't ask for a better accompanist than John Browning.

Excellent! But please do give a listen to Bernstein on Columbia (Sony). For me, his is the definitive performance of the 3rd.
