For some inexplicable reason that one flew under my radar when it was still easily available...
But I've listened to it on Spotify - great recording!

Italian Baroque fans that aren't familiar with this set: take note...
Because Evaristo Felice Dall' Abaco is a winner and this stuff compares favourably with similar set music by Albinoni, Corelli, Geminiani, et all. Elegant and beautifully phrased performances. Recommended.  :)

Beethoven: Sonata No. 11 Op. 22 [Brautigam]

I had thought that Ms Kopatchinskaja plays violin in this recording, teaming up with hand-picked collaborators.  She does, but not in the main work, where she takes the vocal part.  And she relishes the part.  She may not deliver the same degree of refinement and precision as Christine Schaefer, say, but she packs a dramatic punch, sometimes overwhelming everyone else, if briefly.  This is more raw than refined, but it works superbly well all the same, and probably because of that rawness.  The additional works, especially the Webern, cap off a fine recording.

Pounds the table - the First is one of my favourites of the cycle.

Mine, too, Jeffrey. I always thought the first movement alone was a miniature masterpiece.

Having heard #2 a good few times now, I'm happy to continue to echo the warm praise seen in online reviews. I do like it when a piece of music begins to feel familiar or at least not completely new. I sometimes wonder whether it is just my lack of musical understanding that makes embedding new works such a slow process, or a less focused attention span. In any case, this isn't difficult music, despite Taylor's deliberate lack of tunes. Still reminiscent of Simpson's symphonies to me. Not a bad thing by any means 😀

No, I rather like her in the Hermit Songs.

Hmmm...have you heard Leontyne Price in this song cycle? She's amazing, but the recording is early 50s and Barber is on the piano. Not a bad performance, but the fidelity leaves much to be desired.

I am becoming something of a fan of Ives, and these pieces will no doubt reflect Bernstein's skill as a conductor. I shall have to listen!

Oh, another Ivesian on the forum? This is great! Yeah, Bernstein excels in Ives. In fact, it was Bernstein who could be thanked for the resurrection of this composer's music. He was a virtual unknown until Bernstein started championing him early on in his career.
