Lovely, Karl, which performance? On Naxos, perhaps?

Indeed. And this 2-CD set (originally on Collins Classics) is exceptionally good.

How the great records survive!

First issued on LP in 1966, Schwarzkopf's Vier letzte Lieder with Szell has never been out of the catalogue and this coupling, which added a further seven songs recorded in 1969, was issued on CD in 1985. An EMI best seller, it was one of those releases that was on permanent order when I worked in MDC, London at various periods in the late 80s and early 90s.

This was the version by which I came to know Strauss's glorious final paean to the soprano voice, and though I now have many other versions, it is the one to which I always return, the one that I hear in my mind's ear whenever I think of the music. There is something so personal in Schwarzkopf's response to the texts and one senses the deep rapport between her and Szell. The twelve additional orchestral songs are just as wonderful. One of my desert island discs.

Is that MDC in South Kensington? A regular escape from work, you may have served me!. If I recall there was another shop opposite Charring Cross Station in the Strand. Funnily enough I was reading just the other day an amusing anecdote concerning this store  http://landofllostcontent.blogspot.com/

Edit: Previn.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Although your set looks great; I could not justify it atop this 37-disc box  8)

8) Ah, yes. I've got that set, too. Some great performances in that set.

vers la flamme

Claude Debussy: Sonata for violin and piano in G minor. Kyung Wha Chung, Radu Lupu. What an amazing disc this is... four of the greatest chamber works in the entire French classical music repertoire, in damn near definitive performances. I just got it last month, but I'm tempted to call it desert island material. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
