Symphonic Addict

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Symphonic Addict

Rota: Variazioni sopra un tema gioviale

There is a sort of ease in some passages that makes the work just irresistible. If you have affinity for Prokofiev, Respighi and Arnold, this composition will be a real treat for you.

This Decca series devoted to Rota contain many fine pieces, and they should pack all of the CDs in a box.

Vasks: String Quartet No. 3

I like how Vasks combine serenity with some more turbulent passages. A very good work.

Alfven: Symphony No. 2

Latest recording in the CPO Alfven cycle.

My favourite swedish symphony ! Did you like the recording ?

First-Listen Monday -

Yun
Symphony No. 5
Richard Salter (baritone)
Filharmonia Pomorska Bydgoszcz
Takao Ukigaya

I've owned the CPO set of Yun's symphonies for quite some time, but I don't think I ever heard this last symphony from him. It's gorgeous and I'm continuously intrigued by his style and really how it developed, which, unsurprisingly, there's little information available about this or, at least, it seems to be the case.

I almost forgot to participate in First-Listen Monday!

Malipiero: Gabrieliana

Rachmaninov & Ravel: Piano Works- Hannes Minnaar (piano)

NP:

Tansman
Sinfonietta No. 1
Virtuosi di Praga
Israel Yinon

I've really become rather taken with much of Tansman's music. In this particular work (Sinfonietta No. 1), I'm surprised by what appears to be some Delius-like passages, but in a Neoclassical framework. 8) But this doesn't last too long and we're right back to those jazzy harmonies again. A strange mixture, but, hey, it sounds good and this is what is most important, right?

Last work for the night:

Szymanowski
Violin Concerto No. 2, Op. 61
Alena Baeva, violin
Opole Philharmonic SO
Bogusław Dawidow

Thrilling performance!

Malipiero: Gabrieliana

I got that disc recently, and found it quite good. Perhaps the vocal acting in some of the vocal pieces was a tad exaggerated, but the music itself is top-notch Malipiero IMHO.

Schubert: Piano Sonata in C minor, D958

Good morning all. Started the day with a severe cold and all the consequences. So despite feeling uncomfortable I feel that music will get my mood in a better balance as the one with which I started this morning. So after complaining a bit I started with.....

De Leidse Koorboeken.
Volume VI.
CD II.

Johannes Flamingus, Claude de Sermisy, Joachim de Monte.

Egidius Kwartet & College.

This is the last volume in this series, and thus I can safely say that this is the best set of Renaissance musik I have in my collection, which is considerable, so in that respect it is saying something about my regard for this enterprise. They could have filled a lot more volumes. The present volumes scratch just a thin layer of music. There had to be a selection of course, for the Books 1-5 contain so much music that it would take at least 25 volumes to record all of it. This I regret that it is not being done. But apart from these ramblings it should be in everyone's collection. The recordings are top notch as are the performances. This ensemble opens the gates to heaven. Recommended.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
Nelsons: Gewandhausorchester

This was an excellent performance. The orchestra doesn't hold back in the loud parts. I haven't heard all of the famous recordings, but I would be happy listening to this one in the future. It felt shorter than 34.5 minutes!

I'll follow you, but with this recording:

Two terrific albums of the lighter Shostakovich. Chailly also did a third album (this time with the Philadelphia Orchestra) called The Dance Album but I never got that for some reason.
\"A beautiful voice is not enough.\" Maria Callas

Florestan

Some French Sturm-und-Drang.

Both extremely pleasant discoveries. For the first, hat tip to Harry, for the second, hat tip to myself.  :)
