Bach

volume 8

What to say, I'm now on CD 8 and everything sounds fantastic. Hands down one of the best organ performances I have and I prefer them to the Aeolus recordings which, however fantastic they sound, are not one of my favorites because of the organ choice.
Of course that is a personal view.

I'm in!

Returning to Vingt regards with the intention of getting to know the music far better. My only previous listen was in November 2019.

I should give this piece a shot, myself.

Good afternoon all,

In the mood today to chip away at an other outer wall of my comfort zone, Operas.

Streaming a few chunks of various versions of Mozart's Zauberflöte, after reading the brief thread on this work: I have selected Gardiner, Jacobs, Klemperer, Böhm, Abbado.

So far, Klemperer and Abbado are the ones that I have caught my ear (not having an opinion yet on the dialogues in the latter).

Medtner: Sonata-Triad, op.11

I'm not sure whether I've heard these 3 one-movement sonatas before. I certainly don't I knew they were quite short (the middle one only takes about 6 minutes on this recording).

There is much to like about this, not least the ominous passacaglia...

Time to finally start on the Poulenc song series I bought nearly 18 months ago...

One little bite-size cycle at a time?

EDIT: The whole endeavour starts with Cocardes, in which the poetry is complete nonsense but goodness it's sung beautifully.

Mozart Serenade K334. Marriner, ASMF

This work is rather long and expansive, remarkably different in style and use of time compared with more "serious" works such as the symphonies or string quartets. It seems it is mean't to be leisurely rather than concise. There are musical gems sprinkled throughout. The minor key theme and variations is especially attractive.

Marriner's recording is one player per part For contrast, I listened to Karajan's BPO recording with large orchestra (the 60's recording, he did it twice).

There are felicities in Karajan's approach, but the large string section takes the edge off, and I far prefer the small ensemble recording. I notice I also have a recording of the piece by  Archibudelli, maybe I'll listen to that at some point.

That's a fine set Olivier  :)

Not really a composer that is talking to me yet, Jan. I keep dipping a toe.
