While cooking for a lunch I'm hosting tomorrow at home, listened to Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, in this recording (the first the work received):

My impressions are the same as when I first bought this recording a couple of years ago.

Great fun (the opera and the cooking ;))!

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No.4 in E minor, op.98. Herbert von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic

First listen. Wow, this is a really good one. I do enjoy Karajan's way with Brahms.

Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Lucia Popp, soprano Andreas Schmidt, baritone, Concertgebouw Orchestra

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.7 in E minor. Pierre Boulez, Cleveland Orchestra

I like this recording. The Cleveland Orchestra sounds so good. Not my all time favorite 7th; I do appreciate a bit more "darkness". But I like the transparency of this one.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.10 in F-sharp major: Adagio. Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic

Sounding so good right now.

There was a blind listening comparison here on GMG of Mahler's 6th - which was won by Barbirolli (out of 32 starters).

I wonder if it was truly blind since Barbirolli is always groaning!

Thanks for the comments - Discogs has a 'used copy' for about $17, and at Qobuz, an MP3 DL is just $10, however no other format is being offered (as is usual, such as WAV).  I've kind of decreased my DL activities, BUT always an option.  Dave :)

CD quality means flac not mp3.

R. Strauss: Metamorphosen (Appassionato / Mathieu Herzog) - Gorgeous, and the first in a live program, recorded 9-11-21 in Paris. Also from the same concert, Respighi Il Tramonto, with Adèle Charvet (mezzo-soprano), and Schoenberg Transfigured Night.

Thanks David & Todd - I rarely buy DLs now (just don't want to add to my collection at my age) and usually opt for WAVs that I burn to a CD-R for my now rare purchases - as to the Egarr recording under question, I bought a physical 'used' copy from Discogs for about $16 (coming from Canada and described as in 'mint' condition, so fingers crossed).  Dave :)

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.5 in C-sharp minor. Sir John Barbirolli, New Philharmonia Orchestra

Awesome recording of one of my favorite Mahler symphonies. (Though I guess my favorite Mahler symphony is whichever I happen to be listening to at the time ;D)

When I was first getting into Mahler, I used to frequent another classical music forum which shall not be named, and everyone there went completely gaga over Barbirolli's Mahler. Nowadays I never hear anyone talk about it. Do Sir John's Mahler recordings have their fans here on GMG? I haven't heard much, but I kind of like it. This one gives me a very "dark Romantic" kind of feeling, very intense, almost grotesque, like the kind of music you might read Edgar Allan Poe or Mary Shelley to. But it's a VERY solid conception of the work; everything flows, every note perfectly succeeds what came before. The funeral march really does sound like a funeral march here, which is something I can't say about some of the other recordings I love (i.e. Boulez/Vienna, Karajan/Berlin).

Very happy to be revisiting this performance right now!

Hey, I listed this recording as one of my top Mahler preferences.

I was considering this as my concession to Mahler Mania. But such a commitment of time.

Haydn and Monn cello concertos.

Very enjoyable. It was interesting how, heard back to back, the 1st Haydn sounded closer to Baroque and the 2nd more in the Classical style.
