Chadwick: Symphony #2
Järvi: Detroit

An American symphony written a decade before Dvořák's New World. I liked the scherzo the best: it has a fun theme with lots of woodwind solos. In this recording, the woodwinds (especially the double reeds) sounded a bit distant.

Sergei Prokofiev: Symphony No.2 in D minor, op.40. Marin Alsop, São Paulo Symphony Orchestra

Yes. Time I listened to that disc, too!

I've found Prokofiev's Second a bit elusive so far, but I suspect I need to just keep listening. I have the Järvi cycle - sounds like as good a performance as any; haven't heard much about Alsop's Prokofiev, though I do enjoy her in Barber and Bernstein.

TD: Over the last couple of days:

Sibelius
Symphony no. 1
Symphony no. 4
Symphony no. 2
Symphony no. 3
Vienna Philharmonic
Lorin Maazel

(on CD)

Perhaps not my favorite Sibelius cycle (that honor belong to Colin Davis with the Boston Symphony at the moment), but fine performances nonetheless. Only the Third missed the mark in the ones I've heard so far. I'm not exactly fond of the Vienna Phil's first-chair oboe at the time of this recording (a really dry, pinched sound), which is unfortunate given the solo in the trio of the Second Symphony's scherzo, but other than that, it's beautifully played.

So much great music, so little time...

Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No.7 in B-flat major, op.83; Piano Sonata No.8 in B-flat major, op.84. Dinara Klinton

New acquisition. Ms. Klinton plays really well, and the sound is great. Thumbs up from me.

Klinton is new to me - my set is w/ Anne Marie McDermott inserted above - any 'comparison comments'?  Dave :)

Yes. Time I listened to that disc, too!

Two with great taste! I think I'll join in but with another from that cycle...

Ignaz Lachner: String Quartet No. 3 in C major, Op. 54

This exceptionally fine quartet by the brother of the composer Franz Lachner has some great music.

I was particularly taken by the beauty of Tu al cui sguardo onnipossente. A lovely part.

It was one of the first operas I ever saw on stage,  and I then immediately bought the Gardelli recording.

Johann Sebastian Bach.
Cantatas.
Volume 10.
No. 105, "Herr; gehe nicht ins gericht mit deinem Knecht".
No. 179, "Siehe zu, daß deine Gottesfurcht nicht Heuchelei sei"
No. 186, "Ärgre dich, O Seele, nicht".

Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki.
Miah Persson, Robin Blaze, Makoto Sakurada, Peter Kooij.

An ongoing pleasure, for most of the time anyway. Miah Persson proves herself to be a good soprano, a somewhat softly warm voice with little or no vibrato. I still think that the choir Suzuki is using is too large and sings too loud. There is even some distortion when they lash out, for instance in No. 105, last movement, "Chorale" Same goes for the orchestra, the body to my taste is too large. But both things I must accept, but it bothers me anyway.

The world needs more recordings of Frank Martin's music.

I do agree.
So, time to listen again: I'll start with la Petite symphonie concertante
A good morning from the Low Countries.

That €30 a ridiculous price is for the limited amount of playing time!  ???

Musically this is a great set.  :) What is particular about the style of Beauty Farm in comparison to Cappella Flamenca or Diabolus in Musica, is that they use the one voice per part approach to highten the contrast between the voices and highlight expressive elements. The result is more of a dynamic dialogue between the voices, and less of the ensemble as a unity. The Cappella's approach tends more to the latter, Diabolus in Musica opts for a happy medium. (Both those are also strongly recommended!)

Very useful info Que, it helps when ordering slowly in succession all the Beauty Farm recordings. I already printed new nice covers, and will take out a loan to pay for these ridiculous CD'S.
