Hi, Harry! How do you like this set?

Karl :) Its a youthful daredevil performance, so I think its quite good as an interpretation, and fine EMI sound.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

That comment strikes me as bizarre. I love Atterberg, but find Pettersson mostly insufferable. I remember the first concerto for strings as the one piece by Pettersson that resonated with me.
The two are almost polar opposites. Atterberg was at his best in bouncy, cheery, optimistic music with folk tendencies and big-hearted solo melodies. There is very little emotional overlap between his work and Pettersson's.

Superb rendition. Currently, my favorite complete recording. Balanced, lyrical, clean, detailed.   :)

This is very very good. Schumannists, take note.

Strings old and new(er).  Still getting to know the Bartok quartets, loving them so far:

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

My own initial experience with Pettersson (possibly the Second Vn Concerto) left me morally prepared to ignore his music in perpetuity.

So I was equally pleased and surprised at just how good I found this recording of the Eighth Symphony:

Went for a second version of Berio's Rendering, which comes off splendidly.  Perhaps a comp of all recordings may be warranted at some point.  The orchestral version of Brahms' Op 120 comes off better than anticipated.  The Purcell, Bach, and Mozart pieces are also quite fine.  But the surprise of the recording, something up there with Rendering, is the transcription of Boccherini's Ritirata notturna di Madrid.  I recently listened to Karajan's late Resphigi recording which also includes transcribed Boccherini, and that was the highlight of that disc.  I'm thinking I may need to hear me some more transcribed Boccherini.

I know there are admirers of the Second Vn Concerto, but for whatever reason, it and I absolutely failed to hit it off.

Coincidentally, I just finished listening to the Nielsen Fifth, in a spectacular live performance with Thomas Søndergård and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. (No information on when it was recorded, alas.)

I do love that Blomstedt/San Francisco set, the first complete cycle I bought.
