Thanks to San Antone for alerting me of this box set. So far, the performances have been quite good. I haven't got to the chamber music of this set (yet).

I that is a great set.  I am listening to the clarinet/piano stuff right now, all new to me, and I'm loving it.

Very nice, San Antone. I like Bernstein's Clarinet Sonata a lot. My familiarity with it is rather limited as the first time I heard it was through the Bernstein DG set.

Symphonic Addict

Disc 2 (8 Waltzes, Op. 54, B. 101; 4 Eclogues, Op. 56; Moderato in A Major, B. 116; Album Leaves, B. 109; 6 Pieces, Op. 52)

The Waltzes and the Eclogues are the most interesting pieces from this disc. Whether large or small scales, Dvorak knew how to write very fine music.
Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Stop tempting me! :P ;D Looks like a lovely set.

The music is so lovely indeed. Kvapil's playing, I suppose, suits the mood of the works. Perhaps the acoustics and the volume in certain works are not the best, but overall has been satisfying.

Good to hear you're enjoying the music, Cesar.

For their third album for the Resonus Classics label, the acclaimed Dudok Quartet Amsterdam releases a new recording based around the theme of solitude. Recently announced as recipients of a prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Award for 2018, the quartet presents a varied programme inspired by loss and feelings of loneliness, such as Mendelssohns Op. 80 Requiem for Fanny and music by the isolated Soviet composers, Shostakovich and Weinberg who both sacrificed much in pursuit of their art. The Dudok Quartet studied with the Alban Berg Quartet in Cologne and subsequently, for two years, at the Dutch String Quartet Academy with Marc Danel of Quatuor Danel, graduating with highest distinction in 2013. Between 2011 and 2013, the quartet was awarded top prizes in international string quartet competitions such as Quatuors a Bordeaux and Joseph Joachim Weimar. In 2014 the quartet received the Kersjes Prize an award offered to a chamber music group of exceptional talent. The Quartet performs on foru top quality instruments on generous loan from the Dutch Musical Instrument Foundation.

Really excellent performance of mixed composers.  Sound quality is top notch.  :)

Wise words from Que:

Never waste a good reason for a purchase....  ;)

Mendelssohn String Quartet Op. 80 (the one written after Fanny died), and Weinberg String Quartet No. 3.

Hmmm, I would have said that Mendelssohn's Op. 80 is more about grief than solitude.  But these album themes are demanded by the marketing department, the performances are what matter.

Talking about lovely music, I recently played these:

Both are splendid, the 1st SQ has a Dvorakian feel to it I find endearing and idyllic. The 2nd one is slightly more adventurous, but conserves that affectionate expressivity. I'm very fond of these works.

They seem to enjoy making records of composers whom you might not link.  This one puts Bach with Ligeti and Mozart:

The playing seems to be very good, on a first listen.

Added to my Qobuz favorites.  I notice they have a Haydn, Op. 20, volume 1 out:

The start of a new Haydn quartet series?

TD: Weinberg, Chamber Symphony No. 4

"Chamber Symphony" would seem be a light work, but this nearly 40 minute work is as emotionally complex as many large-scale Weinberg works.

Followed by a truly light symphony, Bizet Symphony in C:

I ended up playing the second disk of this 3 times.  It's from the big Westminster Orchestral box.

It's all good...
