The agitated sections of the Tansman share some ideas with the Lutoslawski's, yet this work didn't convince me enough. The slow movements are too quiet, almost unperceivable.

My curiosity is piqued, Cesar!

Cello Concerto

John Barbirolli, London Symphony Orchestra, Jacqueline du Pré (cello)

A classic performance and recording, of course.

For second day in a row, coincidental near hit. I'm listening to Elgar's 2nd sym, Barbirolli conducting, from this

I did not have a very high opinion of Mr. Elgar, but Barbirolli is winning me over. I'm looking forward to the one you posted (I'm working through the box in order...).
It's all good...

4 is one of the best!
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Back to this marvellous set.
A Concert of English Music
I have to go out soon but I've had time, so far, to listen to:
George Butterworth: A Shropshire Lad - Rhapsody and The Banks of Green Willow
and
Bax: Tintagel
These are the finest performances I have heard of these works (I prefer Boult's more objective way in 'Tintagel' to Barbirolli's more 'romantic' version) and they have been very well transferred here:

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Lindberg highlights the polyphonic textures.  As a result I think he loses the narrative, and the result is something shapeless and noisy.  I can't recommend it.  The other recording is much better.

I'm alone in the house and as my neighbours are away I can play something noisy  ;D
This is a good performance but I prefer the Jarvi recording on Chandos (RSNO) which displays greater urgency:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).
