Yeah when I looked up what posters thought you were the only I found praising it!

I think Todd recently reported listening to it and didn't hate it.

Thomson was my first exposure to the music, and I liked it enough to be hooked on Martinu. But when I heard Valek I found it brought out a lyrical, rhapsodic character in the music, which I enjoyed. Thomson puts an emphasis on dramatic aspects which, to my ear, makes the Martinu symphonies sound more conventionally symphonic. The other standard recommendation is Belohlávek/BBC, but I found the audio quality unsatisfactory, sort of artificial sounding to my ear. I'm looking forward to listening to Belohlávek/Czech Phil (although there isn't a complete cycle).

Carl Czerny's instructional exercises may be his lasting legacy but there remain numerous largely forgotten pieces that reveal important elements of his compositional range. The four Romantic Fantasies named after Sir Walter Scott's famous Waverley novels are piano duets of epic breadth. In them Czerny ingeniously develops popular Scottish melodies, including the use of the 'Scotch snap', to generate a vivid programmatic quality that explores numerous genres. I've listened to the first five, and they are fine.  The first couple are relatively better than the Fourth and Fifth, but there's nothing to dislike, let alone hate.  I've got three cycles and prefer Belohlávek, but it's not exactly like there are a huge number of choices with such widely divergent styles as to render a handful great and a handful terrible.  I only wish Ancerl had recorded them all.

I just think it is the most unbelievably refined, nuanced and delicate piano playing. I don't care about the interpretation, she can make great sounds come out of that piece of furniture. @Todd - try it!
