I am hitting the spot today  ;D

Good afternoon all,

Another run of Hindemith - Symphony "Die Harmonie der Welt" but this time, also "Symphonia Serena".
Tortelier / BBC Phil.

Enjoyed the "Serena" but found the "Welt" a little but flat (compared to my first listen of that work I had with Blomstedt's. I might grab a copy of this one as well).

Hans Huber.
Orchestral works.
Volume I.
Eine Lustspielouvertüre
Sommernächte, Erster Serenade.
Winternächte, Zweiter Serenade.
Römischer Carneval, Humoreske/
Sinfonie Orchester Biel Solothurn, Yannis Pouspourikas.

Finally a new and modern recording of Huber's music, which was about time. Add to this a State of the Art recording, performed by one of the best orchestras in Switzerland, with a very creative conductor. It certainly made my day when it was first played a couple of days ago, and I get more enthusiastic every time this music blurs out of the speakers.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Brahms: Choral Works [Parkman]

Zigeunerlieder, Op 103

This music is very upbeat and vibrant in its nature and powerful in its delivery here. The very capable Danish National Radio Choir is accompanied on this occasion by a solo piano.
A wonderful CD.

I surely did.

Bantock: Hebridean Symphony
I'm now of the opinion that this is the finest recording of this mysterious and atmospheric work - better that the much-hyped Hyperion version with Vernon Handley. I now have five  :o recordings (the Marco Polo is the same as the Naxos but the Naxos is better engineered) of this work (including a fine, pioneering LP version with the City of Hull Youth Orchestra conducted by Geoffrey Heald-Smith). Best cover image as well:

"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Gesualdo

A very beautifully executed Gesualdo recording, the ensemble vocals are showing all the colors that are contained in the musical notation. This is a recording that I immediately won over and still my favorite CD with music by Gesualdo.

Way off the beaten path today.

A 1987 BIS release with two full-sized horn concertos by Gordon Jacob and Kurt Atterberg, plus shorter concertante pieces by Lars-Erik Larsson, Matyas Seiber, and Max Reger. First listens to all of this music except maybe the Atterberg.

Just unbelievable voice really, and really poetic diction, beautiful music too - but I'm a sucker for Brahms the opposite of the way that some people can't palate him at all, it's not a rational thing. I'm a Brahms stan.

Likewise, I really enjoy the Symphonia serena, but do not much recall Die Harmonie der Welt. (Or do i?)

Dvorak: Symphony No. 7 [Kertesz]

The first movement is wonderfully lyrical but it also packs quite a punch in the tension and drama departments. I like what the blaring brass brings to the tableau of textures in the music. The music is certainly attacked but not in a bombastic way. Kertesz wields great control over the proceedings while letting the music flow.
The slow movement abounds with superb and the glorious melodies which are wonderfully played. The brass is present again in this music albeit with a different role.
The Scherzo is full blooded, jaunty and most enjoyable with a very contrasting Trio section.
There is something of a dark and brooding tone and atmosphere in the final final movement, almost angry in places. The playing is terrific.

Disc one.

Hi Todd - I own the Flesch Quartet in these works (pic added above - String Quintet the accompany work), but after reading the attached reviews decided a culling was needed, and found a discounted price at JPC for the 2-disc set, i.e. only 8+ Euros for me in the USA - Dave :)
