A soprano of the excessively wobbly variety makes this less than a lovely listen for me, I'm afraid. Interesting music nontheless.

I did enjoy The Bedbug. For those who want an extra dosage of sarcastic, sardonic Shostakovich.

The 90s recording gets a fresh 2022 remaster.  I have no idea if the recording sounds better as a result.  The playing is Prazak grade.

Revisting this disc:

Man, what a superb composer Goffredo Petrassi was! His music displays of all sorts of influences, and yet he has a very personal voice.

Aha, I see you've cracked open the box?  Isn't it a lovely box set?

I think I cannot postpone buying that Diaghilev set any further...  ::)

Good evening, Karl and Ray!

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on March 11, 2023, 09:51:45 AMI had contemplated purchasing that set some years ago, but in the end decided that there was too much overlap with what I already owed (IIRC).

PD

I can understand that. I wondered about it myself, but there was enough that I didn't already have and it pretty much covers everything she recorded for EMI and Virgin Classics. The one major problem with the set, as with all sets of this type, is NO TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS. Do the people who release these sets think that we don't care what they are singing about. With singers like Baker, Schwarzkopf, Fischer-Dieskau, Callas and De Los Angeles I'd have thought they were obligatory. How can you really appreciate why they colour the text in certain ways, if you don't know what they are singing?

Excellent!  Does the set have Narcissus and Echo as well?

How bizarre. I've just been listening to this with great enjoyment.

On to George Lloyd 6 & 7 next...

Not surprisingly, this is pure delight. I especially enjoyed Bacchus et les bacchantes, L'entrée des magiciens et Danse des ombres, and indeed the concluding Pas de deux and Grande Valse Finale. Beautiful stuff!

Well, I definitely look forward to spinning this soon. I will post my impressions in the What ballet are you listening to thread, once I begin.

Wishing you a swift recovery Fox. I like the few Robert Simpson symphonies I've heard, especially the 9th.

Joseph Marx: Romantisches Klavierkonzert in E major. Marc-André Hamelin, Osmo Vänskä, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

First listen to this, a blind purchase from Half Price Books today. It sounds very good; a good example of the "overripe" 20th century late Romanticism that I'm such a sucker for at times. I'd never heard of Marx, but it seems he was once quite successful. Kind of a similar figure to that of Franz Schreker.

YES!  It would be nice to see a complete set of Nikolai Tcherepnin's works: a good number have never been recorded, sad to say.
