It looks like Karajan is playing an invisible violin!  :D

Overall impression: meh
Episodic, no overall structure I could perceive, felt like it was a film score in search of a film.

Agreed that was also my impression with the first Symphony.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Todd

The Prazak contribution, Schulhoff's Five Pieces for String Quartet.  Superb, as expected.  Better than the Petersen?  Probably not.  That's OK.  I'll take two great versions.  Perhaps I should A/B/C the Prazak, Petersen, and Aviv to find the best in my collection.  Wouldn't take long.

Morning all. Continuing with Gunning this morning, appropriately enough, with two symphonies written when he and his wife were diagnosed with some significant health issues (3), and then with some relief and relative recovery (4). Several reviewers speak extremely warmly of the works, but with the caveat that best results come from repeat listens. Even after only a couple of traversals, I agree. Noticing more and more with each play... obviously.

Nice start to the day.

Again, no cover art due to internet stuff.
For a moment I thought this meant that he had exactly three health issues  ;D hope you are feeling well today.

The Borodin - as used in Kismet contains my all time favourite song; "Take My Hand, I'm a strange-looking Parasite"

Haha. Thank you. Slow recovery but hopefully getting there. NHS strike means everything but basic patient care has ground to a halt, so I'm in a bit of a holding pattern aside from monitoring, meds and pain relief. Frustrating.

The music is helping!

I ended up choosing the 11th (though I appreciated the pun!) and the Nielsen Variations:

I rarely listen to those two works, so it was a bit of a treat.

There's no doubting Ms Grimaud's ivory tickling ability here, but I have doubts as to the quality of the Gershwin Piano Concerto which, despite its modest proportions, seems to last forever.  Time passes like sitting in a dentist's waiting room.  The Ravel recording is high end stuff.

Going to spend this week streaming and auditioning a whole bunch of obscure Naxos releases to see if I should download them for $3 each in that ongoing download sale at the Chandos download shop.

Concertos 1 & 2 from Kempff.  Self-recommending...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Staying with Dame Janet, I've started on this selection of some of her recordings for Philips and Decca. This is by no means as exhaustive as the Warner set and there are quite a few plums notable by their absence. Personally, I'd have thought it a good idea to reissue all her 1970s Philips recitals complete, but Universal obviously thought differently.

Disc 1 gives us her 1978 disc of what many of us would know as arie antiche in its entirity. They have been tastefully arranged by Simon Preston and Dame Janet is accompanied by The Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Neville Marriner at the helm, and with Celia Nicklin on oboe, Graham Sheen on Bassoon, James Tyler on lute and Nicholas Kraemer on harpsichord. Lovely performances in all, and the music is more varied than you might expect. The disc is rounded of with a couple of excerpts from one of her greatest stage successes at Glyndebourne , when she played the dual role of Diana and Jove disguised as Diana in Raymond Leppard's realisation of Cavalli's La Calisto. I've never got round to hearing the whole set, but these two excerpts certainly make me want to.

I don't usually listen to Bach on the piano, Martha Argerich is an exception.

Disc 9

Why she decided to play sempre staccato, sforzando e forte most pieces, including some Lieder ohne Worte, is beyond me --- and beyond repair. The most sewing-machine-like piano playing I've ever heard, bar Stravinsky and Son playing a Mozart sonata. My initial enthusiasm for this set turned into disappointment.

This, on the other hand, is bliss. Perfect music and performance to soothe a terrible flu (sore throat, heavy cough, running nose and watery eyes, no fever --- don't know whether it's Covid and I don't even want to find out, probably not since I can smell and taste).

Ditto.
