I would say that I liked but not loved those SQs uniformly.  It has been awhile.  I'll need to reacquaint myself.

Dante Symphony

Daniel Barenboim & Berliner Philharmoniker

I think they're singing that down at Clancy's!  ;)

In recent days...

Jess Thomas as Waldemar: one of the best performances ever by him and one of the best interpretations by Boulez, especially the section "Herr Gott, Weisst Du was Du tatest?"

Also:

"Meet Miss Ruth Sherwood, from Columbus, Ohio, the Middle of the Universe!"

Ah, do let me know when and if you pick him up again. I very much understand why PMD doesn't leap to the top of the British Composer discovery list for many, but I do think his complex and stretching works merit greater attention. I don't turn to him weekly, but it is rare that I go too much longer than that without wanting to hear a block of his work in quick succession.

Now playing:

Peter Maxwell Davies
Symphony 4 and 5
PMD
Scottish Chamber Orchestra
Philharmonia Orchestra
Naxos

This was the first Dante Symphony recording that made it 'stick' for me. Hopefully it goes down well for you!

Absolutely, I love it very much too, a very bewitching, powerfully evocative recording!

Hi San Antone - agree!  8)  Bought the 10-CD box below a year ago - others coming out slowly and not sure when the next 'bargain box' will be released?  Dave :)

Complete Symphonies
Symphonies 13, 14 and 15
Svetlanov
State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia

Darker 13, lighter 14 with some very enjoyable energy and tunes, and currently hearing 15 (what an attractive melody in the second movement!). Continuing to enjoy my first meaningful and full traversal of NYM's symphonies, as it is proving lots of fun and appropriately relaxing. Some of the emotionally searching demands made by other composers I often hear, are absent from this cycle so far, and that different focus is nice. It is simply enjoyable music. I mean that without suggesting NYM falls short in any way. I'm still only half way through, mind...

Dave, I believe they are releasing two volumes a year with the final recordings in 2032 so you can math everything out from there!

Ralph Vaughan Williams: The Lark Ascending. Hugh Bean, Adrian Boult, New Philharmonia Orchestra

I do love this piece, though I realize some find it saccharine or overly sentimental. I guess I can see why, but I don't.

Edit: Now the Serenade to Music, w/ the London Philharmonic Orchestra and several vocal soloists also under Sir Adrian. Sounding better than I remembered it.
