BWV 67 « Halt im Gedächtnis Jesum Christ »
This 'un concludes with a glorious choral fugue.

Jean Sibelius: Lemminkäinen Suite, op.22. Petri Sakari, Iceland Symphony Orchestra

Aside from the very famous Swan movement, I know this music very little, so it's good to get back to it.

Quote from: Mandryka on March 31, 2023, 12:48:36 AMAll agreed with, I preferred the first volume, not least because I wasn't keen on all the instrumental music in the second. Do try the early recordings by Sollazzo - and Danilevskaia's recording of early Italian music. I heard them sing  in Utrecht, and I loved it!

I also liked the 1st volume much better!

My first listen to this work. I like it. The fourth movement/section reminds me a bit of Rimsky-Korsakov's Dance of the Tumblers, and the 5th movement of Bruch's Scottish Fantasy.

Vestard Shimkus' new recording of Debussy's Preludes is wonderful. According to his liner notes, most are single takes, which is a rarity in this age of digitally splicing together fragments of works and calling them performances. Great sound from just two mics, too.

Recent posts here reminded me I haven't listened to Bruckner much in the last year or so.

Mahler: Symphony No. 5 (Daniel Harding / National Youth Orchestra of the United States, live recording August 5, 2022, in the Berlin Konzerthaus) - Inspiring to see young players tackle Mahler, and with such gusto.

Update: the Te Deum is okay, but this Seventh was just too too slow.

The McPhee work is fun!

NYM Symphony No.24 (again!)
This work, in memory of his friend, is one of my favourites of the later symphonies.
Miaskovsky's music can sound quite 'academic' at times but there are moments (like the pounding ostinato at the end of the first movement) where the emotion breaks through and is even more poignant in the circumstances:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Marie-Domitille Murez, Triple Harp.

Music by: Trabaci, Luzzaschi, Frescobaldi, De Maque, Mayone.
Recorded from 11 to 14 November 2021 at Karolina Blaberg (Le Tholonet, France)
TT= 66:00.

My wife wanted to start the morning with some soft and relaxing music, so I selected this one as a new release. Funny enough a CD was never produced, so it was hard to find all the info about it. There is a PDF file attached to the recording, but that's mainly self aggrandizing and commercial humbug. A lot of words without content. Still it is relaxing, but does that amount to anything? No, not really, pretty down to earth playing, with hardly any purpose or interpretational message. She can play, but that's all. The sound is okay. O, well. Cannot find any downloadable image of it.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.
