After some Shostakovich chat elsewhere, this Tenth Symphony showed up, with Gábor Hontvári conducting the Junges Philharmonisches Orchester Niedersachsen, recorded last summer in Hannover.

As in some other current youth orchestra performances, the outstanding level of musicianship is worth noting. It's astonishing how well they play this piece.

Maiden-Listen Monday:
Bruckner: String Quintet - Adagio (for string orchestra)
Skrowaczewski: Saarbrücken

It reminded me a bit of Bruckner's 8th, so I listened to the Adagio (Karajan/Berlin on EMI). I wasn't impressed by this performance. Karajan makes some significant tempo changes that aren't in the score (e.g. slowing down for the Wagner tuba passages). The old sound doesn't help either. (The Adagio of Bruckner's 8th is still incredible! I followed in the score, and at almost 30 minutes it is never too long or repetitive.)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Mass in C minor, K 427, "Grosse Messe". Gary Bertini, WDR Sinfonieorchester und Rundfunkchor Köln

Awesome performance.

Roy Harris: Violin Concerto
I hadn't realised how good this work is (underappreciated like Alwyn's Violin Concerto):
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I agree! And I'll take that cd out today.
After the boisterous first measures, this concerto embarks on a gorgeous trip, now through lyrical outpourings, then folksy dance tunes or quirky rythmical gestures.
I'm listening on YT to Tamsin Waley-Cohen/Litton.

Heinrich Schütz.
Volume V.
CD I & II & III.
Andere Theil kleiner Geistlichen Concerten, Opus 9, SWV 306-337. Volume I, II & III.
Cappella Augustana, Matteo Messori.

The last volume of this series, listening to the complete "Kleiner Geistlichen Concerten" has me all in tatters and feathers. This complete set is so overlooked and even ignored when it was released, and by that ignoring one of Brilliant's greatest achievements. Messori and his band after this project, never had a significant outing on this label again. This is Schütz with a little sprinkling of Italian warmth, sung by a very competent ensemble, never heard it better. This is truly an authentic performance, with instrumentalist who know their way around.
I will cherish and rejoice in the fact that I know it and have it. If you care about Schütz this is the set to acquire. It will be OOP soon.  Well recorded!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

A nice accurate description of the work. I have the Waley-Cohen CD somewhere  ::)

I like all three works on the first edition CD (Kentucky Spring/VC/Symphony No.5)
I had assumed that the VC recording was earlier than 1985.

I wish the fifth symphony would get a really good ( better) recording with "lots of horns"...!

Symphony No. 2 in C minor Op. 17 "Ukrainian"

A Tchaikovsky piece a day keeps the doctor away. 8)

(I've heard this symphony so many times but now it's the first time I noticed a striking resemblance between the not-so-slow movement's main theme and the opening theme of Beethoven's Archduke Trio.)

Oddly enough I was thinking that myself.

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.6 in A minor, the "Tragic". Herbert von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic

Once more with this awesome recording of the 6th this morning before work.

The 6th has always been the one I've struggled the most to appreciate—or to put it more harshly, my least favorite, an opinion that would have earned me the ire of any Mahlerian were I to admit it freely—but more recently I think I'm coming around on it.

Good idea about Karajan/Mahler, I'll join with the 5th:

I share your enthusiasm for this set and I also feel that these recordings are unfairly pushed aside. This edition is no longer available at Brilliant records, although there will still be a few in stock here and there.

The server doesn't seem to have trouble coping with it, which was the motivation for the reboots in the past. Improvements in hardware or software, I would assume.
