I don't like Schoenberg - or so I thought. A step too far. The Piano Concerto isn't and I thought it a revelation with a brilliant Brendel performance.

A perfect CD for those like myself think they don't like Schoenberg and his gang.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Delius

I really like Delius,his music is something special.The use of human voices is exceptional and the atmosphere of his music is very recognizable and stays with you a long time after listening.My appreciation for Delius goes back to the first album I bought with the Academy of st Martin in the Fields.It is music that transports you to another world,a world of fantasy and far dreamlike places. I'm not using music as a medicin but listening to Delius gives me a good feeling in a way no other composer does.

Mookalafalas

Played with extraordinary humility and sweetness. And what tone!  No doubt if I went back to old favorites I'd remember why I love them, but right now this feels definitive. Played both disks, and just started it over again...

My 'gateway' into the Second Viennese School was Berg's Violin Concerto --- the Mutter/Levine recording. I listened to this performance about 11 times in a row when I first heard it. This still is a work that I have a deep connection with. From here, I got into Schoenberg and Webern, but also looked into Berg's oeuvre.

The title The Forgotten Rite intrigues me. Is it similar to the Legend, in being an imagining of Neolithic England?

And I have 3 CDs of Eric Parkin playing piano music so, yes, that Chandos chamber music disc is powerfully indicated.

Last few days, two new acquisitions (one a replacement - Dvorak & the other an addition):

Dvorak, Antonin - Violin Concerto, Romance, et al w/ Jan Mráček and James Judd/Czech National SO; just a great performance and a full disc w/ nearly 70 minutes of music by the composer - reviews attached.

Dohnanyi, Ernst - Symphony No. 2 & Symphonic Minutes w/ Matthias Bamert and the BBC Philharmonic - another excellent performance and recording - some reviews also attached.  Now I do not own Bamert's other symphonic disc (last below), so a possible order?  Dave :)

The Ireland Piano Concerto and Delius Piano Concerto, Lane, LLoyd-Jones, Ulster

The Ireland is an interesting piece. The first movement alternates lyrical material with faster dramatic material. The slow movement begins with a wonderfully dissonant chorale-style theme for strings (strong functional dissonance, in that 20th century English string music way) which leads without break to a lively, dance-like close. Thoroughly enjoyed.

The Delius is more conventional than some of his works, and features obvious "American" (African-American) themes, similar to Dvorak's use of them in some passages of the New World Symphony and the "American" string quartet. A work I will have to spend more time with.
