Love Suk's chamber music!  I have this set.  Do you have it too or just the single CD?

Best,

PD

Hello PD, I own the single issues. Yes, I'm enjoying what I've heard so far. Great composer.

Khachaturian: Violin Concerto in D minor

From this new acquisition:

Fantastic! I have forgotten just how much I enjoy this concerto. It's probably been almost 9-10 years since I've heard it.

Just started listening to this Composers music a few days ago - he has a lot of Symphonies and String Quartets. I like... :D

I want to hear all his Symphonies and String Quartets eventually - What do you think are some of his top works?

I still have yet to connect to any of the string quartets.

Of the SQs, the 6th really stood out in my mind. I'd consider the following some of his best works: Symphonies Nos. 3-6, Concertino, Violin Sonata No. 4, Cello Sonata No. 2, Cello Concerto, Chamber Symphony No. 4, Clarinet Concerto, Clarinet Sonata, the Piano Sonatas, Piano Quintet, Trumpet Concerto and The Golden Key. I think this is enough to keep you busy for awhile. ;) One of the things that turned me off initially about Weinberg was what I perceived to be a 'Shostakovich Jr.' but as time has progressed I realized how wrong I was. Weinberg is an incredibly lyrical composer and his approach to rhythm compared to say Shostakovich wasn't as heavy-handed. He also didn't have sharp contrasts and sudden twists that Shostakovich would throw in. Weinberg developed his music rather differently. There is a haunting, brooding quality within Weinberg's music that will stay with you once you've really tapped into what his style is all about.

Yes, they're tough nuts aren't they? I have found that my approach was rather wrong-headed as I was expecting something along the lines of Shostakovich's but this is, thankfully, what we didn't get. It seems the 6th SQ is what helped me get into the music.

Rather boring for thread purposes, but I often revisit recent acquisitions:

Discs 5 and 11, Boris Chaikovsky and Concertos 1963-67 (Tishchenko, Khachaturian, Toyama).

Inspired by a Hurwitz video, listened to a couple Elgar Symphony No. 2 recordings, Slatkin (one of his main recs) and Handley (not one of the recs, just one I already had)

You know, I'm not sure I like this music anymore.  :(
