I'm going chronologically through all the works I can find recordings of, and he still confuses me...

The 1980s in particular (which is where I am now). It seems to be a period where he's being all over the place and I often find it hard to understand. Quite different from Symphony no.3 or Spell.

If he confuses you, just think what he does to me and I'm not going through his music chronologically. :)

Szymanowski, Penthesilea

Rather luscious in this recording. I'm definitely inclined to stick with Antoni Wit for the orchestral works.

And then 6 Songs, op.20. I've heard quite variable singing of Szymanowski's songs so far. This is one of the good ones.

Wit is excellent in Szymanowski, but I love Rattle's series as well. As for the songs, yes, there is some good to decent singing in that set. I'm not as drawn to Szymanowski's songs as I am other parts of his oeuvre.

Op 2.  Revisiting to hear if it retains Top 10 status.  So far, it does.

Todd - have you had a chance to decide on Scherbakov's cycle inserted above?  Or any other recent movement(s) in your 'top ten' list?  Thanks - Dave

What do you think of the 1st Violin Sonata? More Romantic then expected, I enjoyed the work very much.

Yes, that's a very good work, a bit more more conservative and longer than No. 2.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

It's been SO long since I listened to solo piano music by Fauré.

I think I did listen to some of Rattle's performances on my first trip through Szymanowski, and I'm sure I will again as his reputation in this music is excellent. The thing that's striking me with Wit is the clarity, which is no easy thing in such hot-headed music. Credit to the the engineers just as much as the performers.
