Alright, that's all the Dvořák I'm going to be able to take for quite some time...

In response to Mandryka's question about more modern performances of Debussy's Préludes, Book II...

NP:

Debussy
Préludes, Book II
Sasaki

You simply need to listen to this Mandryka. Her touch is magnificent and, interpretatively, Sasaki must be in some kind of hallucinogenic dream state. My mind certainly feels at one and completely at peace in this performance.

Walton: String Quartet No. 1
Schumann: String Quartet No. 1

I'm surprised by how dissonant and daring Walton's String Quartet (from 1922) is. Being an early work, it's nothing short of brilliant and substantial. Very glad to having revisited it.

Schumann's quartet has impressed me once again. This is really fine music. The 2nd movement is just exciting in its marked drive. These could be my reference recordings for Schumann's string quartets. Superlative playing from all involved.

Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Adrian Willaert, the Flemish master, of master , wrote Motets worth your time, whit ensemble Singer Pur from Austria, top notch rendition , make these Motets fluid and warm, bold, may I dare say there his some sort of Beauty Farm splendor to the work whiteout being related. Great super release, in CD format, sound's better than a download, anyway, ya know my liking for well elaborated motets, well?, there we are ,

I have the original issues of those. The photos were all DSCH at or about the same time as the symphony on the CD. In this case it's [I'm fairly sure] Shostakovich, Barshai (as conductor) and the vocal soloists taking their bow at one of the symphony's premiere performances.

To be precise, it was taken on 1 October 1969 after a performance in Leningrad. So based on other information that's 2 days after the premiere.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

Concerto gregoriano

It always intrigues me how similar the 1st movement sounds to anything by VW.

When I first heard it on the radio I thought that it must be something by Finzi.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I'm quite taken with this cycle! :)

Which is a mixed blessing, since these are four separate, expensive volumes...  ::)

I grabbed a random Mozart disc from this set and was so captivated that, a few days later, I've played more or less all 11 discs in it:

Marvellous playing, fine sound, and all those old masters one tends to forget while exploring all those exciting new issues. Mozart, Haydn and Schubert, just wow!

BTW; Mozart's late quartets contains some of his very best music.

Such an endearing piece indeed. The very gentle beginning always puts me in the right mood.

I do like this side of Arnold. My mood was further improved by the English and Scottish Dances.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Ewald Kooiman plays on a Gabler organ 1750, Weingarten, Germany.
Temperament: Modified Gäbler.
Pitch A= 419 Hz, at 15 degrees C.

Somewhat better recorded,  although some pieces are still overly bright, playing is much more relaxed as in the first volume of the Clavierübung, but not in all pieces, so the detailing is one to follow now,  but not in every track. Still not my favoutite interpretation.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

She plays them like Debussy's preludes, an exploration of timbre and rhythm but impressionistic, I mean - it does not sound like abstract music.

That made me curious, she is more delicate in her playing than others

As sublime as the first CD. Same soloists and orchestra. Well recorded and performed. A box with 10 CD'S with a comprehensive booklet, for a price that would not even buy you a full price CD.
