Be careful, it's a slippery slope which starts with letting Takemitsu tinkle and finishes up with letting Debussy tinkle.

I'll remember to check Debussy out should I ever want to hear more than the occasional bit of solo piano.

That wasn't a recommendation!

A really excellent disc in the typically slightly rural neoclassical/romantic vein that one can find in so many Swedish composer from this period (Peterson-Berger but with more substance and structure, von Koch, Atterberg but slightly more romantic, Rangstrøm, early Rosenberg, to name some). Really excellent and my first taste of de Frumerie:

Boccherini: String Quartet IV Op. 24/6 [Europa Galante]

What a wonderful work this is. The music flows so effortlessly throughout.

I find Boccherini seriously underappreciated in general, and a hidden gem of the period.

The good stuff!  :)  It's already a classic, I would say.

Absolutely!  :)
Because he was quite prolific, his output hard to navigate to find the gemms.
But I find Biondi and La Real Cámera reliable guides.

Yes, I quite agree. He was a seriously good composer and his music is always giving, interesting and charming.

As if there wasn't already more than enough Scriabin in the world.

I am not familiar with the string quartets. I would associate him more with the various quintets and symphonies.

Irons

Alwyn: 3rd String Quartet.

One of Alwyn's most important works. In two parts, with the second being the composer's swan song. The way the music falters and fades at the close I found sad. My preference is for the edgy and spikey Tippett SQ performance over the smoother Quartet of London on Chandos. Listening back to back, the first movement of the former sounded like Bartok and the latter, Ravel! I found it very surprising that the same work can sound so different by interpretation.

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

New acquisition, first listen.

Marin Marais.
Premier Livre de Pieces de Viole.
Pieces a une et Deux Violes, Premier Livre (1686)
CD III.

Sujet Diversitez. (Continuo: Bass Viol, Theorbo, Archlute)
Tombeau de Mr Meliton a Deux Violes. (Continuo: Harpsichord)
Rondeau. (Continuo: Guitar, Theorbo)
Suite in D major. (Continuo: Bass Viol, Guitar)
Suite in G minor. (Continuo: Bass Viol, Harpsichord)

Francois Joubert Caillet, Bass Viol.
L' Acheron.

Absolutely stunning performance, in very good sound. By now I can say its highly recommendable. Marais does not come much better as this. And what an intro to this disc with the first track, "Sujet Diversitez" its breathtaking really.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
