Beethoven: String Quartets [Gewandhaus Quartet]

String Quartet Op. 132

This is writing for a four stringed instrument ensemble that is magnificent, eternal and it sings to the ages. The music is always probing and searching, absorbing and compelling.

Einojuhani Rautavaara.

Symphonies 1-3.

Leipzig Radio SO, Max Pommer.

I did not expect from the likes of Max Pommer to deliver such pristine performances of Rautavaara's symphonies. But by Gad he did. A consideration for anyone wanting to have all three symphonies in a row. It certainly gets you through the motions in a very comprehensive manner. Pommer keeps the orchestra in a tight reign, and brings out the best of this composer. Sound is very good.

This has been my 'go to' for these symphonies for years, and helped me to really enjoy Rautavaara.

Great choice 🙂

I don't know either of them well enough Jan to make the comparison. I'm 'ploughing through' the Chandos recording in instalments at the moment (3CDs). I like Bantock's music but I'm not sure how often I'll be listening to 'Omar Khayám' because of its length. I'll report back in due course!
The Chandos has about 20 mins of cuts whereas the Lyrita is complete.

In the meantime this might help:

Hope it helps to make you feel better John - a good choice and I really like that boxed set with alternative recordings of Symphony No.6 etc.

Thanks, Jeffrey. It certainly perked me up for sure, especially that jovial final movement, which contains an earworm that never quite leaves my mind until well after a week. :D Yes, this Boult box is superb in all respects.

Back to back Sibelius symphonies to accompany a long working day before beginning a week of annual leave. I appreciate several cycles but this one is familiar and works for me.

Such an unbelievably great cycle. Vänskä has the full measure of this music and he brought a unique sound to Sibelius that even Colin Davis' three cycles couldn't match: the haunting and crushing sound of silence. This, of course, isn't to say that Vänskä ignores those big climatic moments, but he brought out those eerie silences better than any other conductor. Other favorite Sibelians in no particular order: Segerstam, Berglund, Bernstein, Saraste and lately I've been rather taken by Maazel (on Decca with the Wiener Philharmoniker).

Finishing up a brief survey of Elgar today.

Listening to a podcast of "Desert Island Discs" last week thought it interesting that Yo-Yo Ma picked Jackie's famous recording of the Elgar concerto. He also chose Dame Janet in the famous eight, not Elgar but Richard Strauss and "Morgen".

You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.
