After watching Hurwitz's video that is nearly as long as the Requiem.

Symphonic Addict

Symphonic Overture No. 3

What an uplifting work! It never fails to put a smile on my face.

Symphony No. 5

I have to remind myself with more frequency about how stunning this work is. Propulsive stuff.

The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied.

It's a good 'un for sure. This was the first recording I bought of this Piano Quintet and it remains my favorite out of the five or six I own.

Que + Other Sweelinck Fans - I own just 4 CDs of his works, 2 being vocal - SO, my 2 KB discs are on the first pic row below; enjoy both w/ just a few duplications - do I want and/or need more - WELL, on Amazon, there is an inexpensive Brilliant 6-CD offering and another 6-CD set on Glossa (not cheap!) - the collection in question (purple label) for a 'used' edition (Amazon USA) for $100 - seems to have 9 CDs - what is included over the 6-disc sets?  Hate to cull out my Alina & Glen recordings - any comments appreciated.  Thanks - Dave :)

I have the Dutch NM Classics set, and it was love at first sight (hearing). The later Glossa set has a lot of the same performers and from what I heard of it, it is more than a worthy substitute. The Bèrben I bought on impulse but it has failed to enthuse me so far... Glen Wilson - excellent. The Brilliant set didn't impress me at all.

Another set wich is very dear to me,really comforting in this ugly world.

Following your lead this morning.  :)

Like you, I'm quite taken with this set. Maybe the rarity factor plays into it, or the presentation with the notes and texts in a little "bible". But then again the music is rather special and performances by Singer Pur are a perfect match.
Can't believe Ars Musici only reissued a single disc selection...  it's practically a crime..

Traverso

I couldn't agree more, it's a beautifully edited set and feels like a treasure. This is one of those cases where you wonder why the whole set isn't available. There's little to be found on YouTube and certainly nothing at all with Singer Pur.
I have therefore attached another video that was a conclusion of a performance of the Bach Matthew Passion.

Bloch: Israel Symphony
Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Svetlanov.
Arguably the most moving performance of this great work:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

I have a nice CD which features the piano quintets by Weinberg and Schnittke, both of which I rate very highly.

This is the first of two performances of the 2nd symphony by Kondrashin. The other is from 1969 on Russian Disc. This is the actual premiere performance of the work, recorded live is superb sound (really), with very little audience noise. I think it's a better performance and recording than the Fedosseyev I listened to last week. Curiously, that was paired with the 4th symphony (with harp), where 3 movements are based on piano preludes written by the composer in 1936 as an 11 year old boy. Well, these preludes are included in the Hanssler Profil issue (this very one), thus making the two discs complementary...
Interesting André - I'm encouraged to listen to this disc again. The 3rd Symphony 'Sevastopol' is my favourite.
