Morning listening - recent arrival:

I already liked the 1st volume, but this is even better.
Presentation, however, leaves a lot to be desired... Apart from the hideous cover, we are offered white print on black pages and the Latin texts without translations.

Franz Schubert.

Die Große Symphonie in C-Dur, D. 944.

Orchester Klangverwaltung, Enoch zu Guttenberg.
SACD.

This is one of the best performance of this Symphony as I have so far. One has to hear to believe what a great interpretation this is. I always have been an admirer of the conductor, but of all his recordings this one tops the list. It is certainly a best Buy 2021. The sound is State of the Art.
It has been a tradition on GMG as long as I remember to nominate recordings that made an impression of sorts, so I go along with that.
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

To those who criticize this for being too overwrought and unrestrainedly passionate: you have a good point....but, I'm really loving it 8)

A Secret Labyrinth [Van Nevel]: CD 6: This CD comprises the music of Matthaeus Pipelare

I have had no previous exposure to the music of this composer prior to listening to this CD. This offering comprises a sample of both his secular and sacred music. My initial reaction is that I enjoy his musical language and his harmonic constructions. Everything that I have heard on this CD is interesting, engaging and very much worth listening to. His sense and delivery of polyphony was very noteworthy. The Missa 'L'homme armé' is a particularly noteworthy work. The presentation of this music by the Huelgas Ensemble is really wonderful.

This Pipelare disc is really wonderful:

One of their best efforts IMO. Never seen a vol 2 though.

Fauré: Caligula, op. 52 [Plasson]

I like the very celebratory introduction to this work with its brass fanfares. I also particularly like that certain air, or feel, of lightness that pervades this work. It is quite charming.

Robert Ward: Piano Concerto - a most enjoyable and engaging work - not deep, but memorable.
It might appeal to admirers of George Lloyd.

Jules Massenet.

Orchestral works.

Truls Mørk, Cello.
Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Neeme Järvi

One of the very best CD's Jarvi made for Chandos. A truly visionary interpretation. Massenet does not come any better. State of the Art sound.

That's a great CD! It couples two of Honegger's finest works - both very moving.

It's excellent, Andre. I have the whole Schmidt Luisi series and haven't been disappointed with any of the performances.

Thanks, John !
