Well I didn't say streaming is king. For me, having a collection is king. But I curate my collection a lot more slowly than many people on GMG.

No, I appreciate that isn't your position nor for a great many others, either. It works for me though  :)

We are incredibly fortunate to have such first world choices. I remind myself often of just how fortunate. Enjoy your listening today!

Enjoy your listening today!

Thanks. So far on the classical front, it's been the Chopin Preludes (as said, I consider a masterpiece), and the 2 Haydn trios were a total delight from start to finish.  The Talking Heads album I tried, on the other hand, was a bit meh.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

The new erato

Maconchy quartets 5-8 now. Absolutely outstanding.

My 'meh' moment was yesterday with Philip Sawyers. I am a big fan of his symphonies but this concertos release seemed really dull, particularly the trumpet pieces. Perhaps Hovhaness and his use of the trumpet was too fresh in my mind.

+1 for the Maconchy

Should have marked it as sarcasm.

My post was not just a reaction to GMG, but to some of the other comments I've seen on other forums, e.g. MusicWeb.  I find the comments on the MusicWeb forum particularly rich given the mediocre white male composers they constantly hype.

For clarity - the MWI "forum" is not a forum - it is a message board.  The opinions expressed there are moderated (as they are here) but they do not represent the position of MWI or any of its reviewers per se.  If you feel strongly that MWI is unrepresentative or biased in its views or content then I suggest you offer to review for the site - they are always in need of new reviewers.

Morning listening:

This is quite pretty and very well sung, but inauthentic and unidiomatic in various ways.

Yes, I don't know about inauthentic and unidiomatic, but I know I don't enjoy it, and it is my favourite Josquin mass. The Capella Pratrensis CD is the one I like the most -- it may be hard to find, I just don't know. I was really disappointed to see that Tetsuro Hanai didn't do it in their complete masses series -- presumably there is some doubt about the author of the music.

I'm a bit Josquined out, Josquined up, over Josquined at the moment -- too much rich cake in 2021, I need some hair shirt music to reccover.

Maiden listen.

Absolutely ravishing music. I can't believe I waited that long to listen to Rachmaninoff's operas.

Oh yes, an exquisite work as are all of the Rachmaninov operas.

I'll put him back on my Top 10, nay, Top 5 list (Mozart, Schubert, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff).
