Marais, Marin (1656-1728) - Fourth Book of Viol Pieces w/ Francois Joubert-Caillet and L'Achéron - spurred on by Harry & Que, this is my second purchase of Joubert-Calillet's recordings (also have his Bk 1) - a recent addition from JPC 'across the pond' - now need to decide on Bks. 2 & 3; already have a number of performances but not the 'complete' books - Dave :)

It's a distinctive piano. Mejoueva is heavy and the sound she makes isn't very nuanced. It is lyrical. I think it's absolutely horrid! It's not me.

Yes I know, and that's wonderful! I like his Diversions Overture as well.
My mentor died recently. He was a great mentor and person, while we were from very different backgrounds, race, and cultures, etc. I miss him and think about him every day.

PI Tchaikovsky
Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, op. 41
Latvian Radio Choir - Sigvards Kļava

For this afternoon:

I wonder if Tchaikovsky was tied as to what he could do with this Liturgy, harmonically and texturally speaking? I seem to remember Rachmaninov having to follow some rules by the Orthodox Church when writing for his setting of the Chrysostom Liturgy or Vigil.

Tchaikovsky's is beautiful to be sure, but it also seems a little sterile and functional sounding. Maybe I hear this too because it is not being performed by an old Russian chorus.

Now on to the Nine Sacred Choruses from the same performers.

Richard Strauss: Festival Prelude for Organ and Orchestra.
This is my favourite work from a composer whose music I generally dislike:

We all know that already, don't we, Jeffrey.  ;)

From this OOP set -

Honegger's three SQs should be a part of every string quartet's repertoire. They're fabulous works.

Three remarkable works, but the 2nd just stands out.

It's okay as there are an inordinate amount of composers that Jeffrey likes that I do not. :) But, thankfully, we do have some similar likes and overlap here and there. The same with you and me.

How is this work? Worth listening?
I'm not a huge John Adams fan, but there's enough rhythmic variety to keep this from being as repetitive as some minimalism. In fact, that's probably not an accurate appellation for "Must....?" Great playing by all involved. So, overall it's worth a listen, particularly if you use any of the streaming platforms.
