Disc 2

Concerto for two pianos - Francis Poulenc, Jacques Février (pianos) - Paris Conservatoire Orch. - Pierre Dervaux
Aubade - Gabriel Tacchino (piano) - Paris Conservatoire Orch. - Georges Prêtre
Les Biches - Ambrosian Singers, Philharmonia Orch. - Georges Prêtre

The second disc from this excellent combination includes Poulenc's own performance of the Concerto for Two Pianos, with Jacques Février. It also includes the more rarely performed Aubade, which has been a favourite of mine since I was a teenager. Prêtre's 1980 recording of the ballet Les Biches, first performed by the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo on the eve of Poulenc's 25th birthday; an early work but it already bears all the hallmarks of his style.

Outstanding in every possible way. Also, remember folks, by me listening to a Russian composer doesn't mean I support Putin's cause. ::) ;)

The ones with Salonen, Craft and also the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra are all quite good, too. So definitely check those out.

Terrific performances of all three concertos in superb sound. All recorded in London in 1992, both piano concertos at Walthamstow Town Hall and the organ concerto at St Albans cathedral. Rogé is the soloist in the Piano Concerto and plays second piano in the Concerto for 2 Pianos.

An interesting and deeply felt work no doubt, but unlikely to elicit more than a lukewarm response from most listeners (me included).

My good friend is Lithuanian and comes from the city near where that cover photo was taken. It's a spot called Kryžių kalnas or "hill of crosses". Would love to see it in person. Anyway, I have that disc too and didn't get too too much out of it either, but I shall revisit. Would love to explore more music by Lithuanian composers.

I listened to two string quartets of Vaughan Williams (g-minor and a-minor) in a recording by the Maggini Quartet (Naxos). I also listened to a recording of the a-minor quartet by the Music Group of London (EMI). I've never listened to these works before.

The earlier quartet was written when RVW was a student, the second a mature work which features the viola, which I enjoy. I found all three recordings very satisfying.

Pounds the table! I love RVW's string quartets.
