Berwald, Franz - Orchestral & Chamber Works and short bio below - check link for more, including list of his compositions - I own about 8 discs of his works - an amazing character regarding his many career choices, including musician and composer; not well respected in his lifetime but his post-mortem status dramatically improved -  8)  Dave

I noticed a mini-obsession with this set here on GMG recently. Where do people get it? Amazon.com lists it for a kings ransom, Amazon.co.uk says it hasn't been released yet, Presto seems to have it for sale for a decent price, but Presto shipping costs to the U.S. are high. What to do?

I see that the it is double the price  than at Presto, the Brúggen is my absolute winner but that is almost  impossible  to find certain for a friendly price.
What to do.....?
Maybe things will alter when it is easier available. :)
I also see delivery problems with Presto and I bought my set cheaper than the current price.

Yes, maybe supplies will normalize. I've noticed that recent releases from Eloquence Australia tend to have a chaotic initial distribution.

I don't have the Bruggen set, but I think I have all or nearly all of it in various prior releases, and I have Harnoncourt's recordings and the Dennis Russell Davies complete set, which I like a lot. I have to remind myself to resist the temptation.

I like the DRD a lot, too. In answer to your q., I got mine at importcds.com.

Following the lovely Une Fête en Ukraine by Thomas de Hartmann, AG seemed to be calling. Again, Glazunov was one of my early discoveries, and has a high place in my affections.

Gian Francesco Malipiero: Symphony No.6, "Degli archi" (for strings). Antonio de Almeida, Moscow Symphony Orchestra

Frequent shit-talking about these recordings from certain vocal members of our community piqued my interest  ;D  So far, I'm a fan. Sounds excellent. The slow movement reminds me a bit of Mahler's Adagietto.

My favorite from that release is probably Symphony No 11.

Brahms: Symphony No. 1

So far it sounds beautiful.

This was probably the first Brahms cycle I ever bought, probably more than 30 years ago, on MCA CDs.  That was the one with the reversed channels on some tracks.  At some point, not knowing any better, I culled it, and then years later was moved to replace it.  Wonderful to have it in such a fine remastering.

Please do Steinberg's Bruckner 7 next, DG.

On Ash Wednesday I was playing this in my room before school:

Two of my 8th Grade boys came in: they had been listening from the hall for a few minutes.

One of them said: "That music's really good!"

It is indeed an excellent box, tomorrow I will listen to the Gurre Lieder. :)
Adam Fischer's set is also very enjoyable.I'm going to listen No.88 from that set.

Strangely, I'm not sure I've ever heard Gurrelieder at all! I guess I'm a little intimidated by the sheer enormity of it. One of these days...

Importcds is the only place I've seen it for a reasonable price.

TD: next in the series of Japanese composers:

Komei Abe
Symphony no. 1
*Divertimento for alto saxophone and orchestra
Sinfonietta
*Aleksey Volkov, saxophone
Russian Philharmonic Orchestra
Dmitry Yablonsky

(on Spotify)

Fun, if not particularly memorable works, in a style which reminded me of Prokofiev, or Shostakovich at his most humorous (the Ninth Symphony came immediately to mind, or perhaps the Jazz Suites?) Which isn't to say it's light... just that it doesn't take itself too seriously.
So much great music, so little time...

After the troubled, turbulent 3rd symphony, Yoshimatsu came up with a shorter, much lighter work, full of chirping bird sounds and child-in-a-toy-shop atmosphere. The trombone concerto is a more adventurous piece, exploiting the instrument's blustery character. It is related to the Orion constellation, the most easily recognizable in the sky with its compact form and geometric pattern. Atom Hearts Club Suite no 1 is an orchestral spoof on popular and rock classics. Great fun. All told, a very different musical experience than the previous disc (symph 3 and the sax concerto).

Have you heard his recording of Granados' "Goyescas"? It's spectacular.
