Welcome..... :)
A very nice disc!

TD
Prokofiev Symphony No.3 'The Fiery Angel'
A wonderfully powerful performance - very moving:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Bloch, Ernest (1880-1959) - sampling the half dozen+ discs of this composer in my collection - a favorite is the old Howard Hanson recording of the Concerto Grossi & Schelomo (which I have in another performance) - looking at the list of compositions, I have most of the non-vocal works desired except for the Solo Cello Suites - might try a listen on Spotify.  Short Wiki introduction below - born in Geneva, lived in Germany and France then came to the United States in 1916, becoming a citizen in 1924.  Dave :)

QuoteErnest Bloch was a Swiss-born American composer. Bloch was a preeminent artist in his day, and left a lasting legacy. He is recognized as one of the greatest Swiss composers in history. As well as producing musical scores, Bloch had an academic career that culminated in his recognition as Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley in 1952. (Source)

Shostakovich: Violin Concerto No. 2

Very appropriate for these times, I guess

You know, it's a while since I've listened to the c# minor Concerto.

TD ... while I certainly enjoyed the Beethoven cycle very well, I'm up for a change:

Just finished:

Gian Francesco Malipiero: Symphony No.5, "Concertante in eco". Antonio de Almeida, Moscow Symphony Orchestra

Wow, this is so killer. Malipiero reminds me a bit of Martinů, and of his paisan Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Just started:

So good.

I was listening to that recording just yesterday and particularly enjoyed it this time through. Mackerras is as excellent as always in this kind of stuff, but I must admit that despite liking lots of things about the Field Mass, I haven't fully made up my mind about it yet. Though Martinu having composed as a tribute to the Czech Resistance in 1939, it carried a certain extra frisson this time.

Also spun recently:

Telemann:Concerto for 2 Flutes and Bass Instrument in A Minor, TWV 53:A1,
Quartet in D Major, TWV 43:D7

Camerata Köln, La Stagione Frankfurt, Michael Schneider

Just perfect.

Music by Peter Philips and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck on disc 6 of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book.

Sofar Belder's Philips impresses me the most. Hopefully that's not because I have little to compare it with..  ;)

I remember saying here that I had enjoyed his Philips most, and Premont responded by saying he thought the Byrd on the earlier recordings was good.  In truth, I think anyone can make Peter Philips's music sound attractive, it's such sweet  music, and I haven't heard very much of the Belder series so I can't comment on whether there are other special things in it.

Agreed.

There is, unfortunately, much music out there that weighs heavily on the soul. But art often is born out of tragic (or celebratory) circumstances, whether personal or global.

Inexplicably, I had not listed to Barto's Chopin Preludes until now.  Very strongly individual, though not as extreme as his Ondine recordings, this is a superb set.  Hopefully, Warner does a Barto box at some point.
