Bach: St. John Passion [Bruggen] - Part II

The overall tone of this performance is both devotional and understatedly dramatic: nothing is overstated or over dramatic. However, it is never pedestrian or laboured; far from it, in fact. It moves along very well. It is well balanced throughout.
All of the performers, vocal and instrumental, are particularly fine. I especially find the choral singing to be wonderful. The instrumental ensemble sounds mellow and elegant. It is a wonderfully refined live performance. One very much gets the sense here of a story being told, and well told at that.

Munich - A Commemorative Waltz

Detroit SO - Neeme Järvi

It appears that Järvi provides a little extra music from the Schlagobers opera than is provided in the printed concert suite, at least from what I can see comparing to Nott and Rickenbacher.

Schlagobers isn't an opera, but a ballet.  :)

Duly noted. It is rare that I opt for a concert suite over the complete ballet, I assumed it came from an opera. That, and all of the Strauss symphonic fantasies I have been sopping up lately.

I think I ordered this recording from one of the record clubs, BMG or Columbia House, but my interest was low at the time. I liked it better this time around than I remembered it in my mind.

I liked it--some nice interesting touches.
But I'm not the type to microscopically compare it to 150 other Hammerklaviers. I'm not even the type to own 150 other Hammerklaviers.

I quite like Schlagobers, but I'm an ardent Straussian and love this man's music. Of course, it's not one of his "great" works, but there are some excellent musical moments throughout the ballet. The same with Josephslegende.

An outstanding work. This whole recording is a musical goldmine. I wish Khachaturian wrote more chamber music.
