This performance and recording need no praise, it is praise in itself.

Best set of Franco-Flemish, or rather: Netherlandish, repertoire ever!  :)

I already have three complete cycles, Haitink, Barshai and Kitajenko. I try to cut down of buying in excess, and to give it a good start I stream through Qobuz a lot of music at minimal costs. So Ceatano is on my list :)

You have become a streaming convert!   ;)

Sorry to hear you've caught the virus. Hopes for a quick recovery. In the mean time, I thought pleasant Strauss Waltzes would be proscribed. :)

Ideally the beer would be Netherlandish, preferably Flemish, as well! :D

Pounds the table for Fuchs, Dave, and also for a pupil of his absent from your list, namely Enescu.

Hi Andrei - well, I looked at my link and George is indeed there and should have been included!  :o   Dave

Yes I want to spend some money on other things, last year it was almost 6000,- euros :o And I have already all the music I need, apart from really special things that is.
Drink to me only with thine ears, and I will pledge with sound.

Many thanks to all of you. Hopefully a relatively mild case. Not much physical activity for the next few days. Not much Strauss either.

;D

This is how the availability of streaming has affected me as well: I still buy the "extra specials" on disc. And thanks to streaming, I know what they are.  :)

If Netherlandish, then Moreeke for me, alsjeblieft. If Franco-Flemish, then Pelforth. If Flemish proper, then Leffe bruin. Dank je well, mijnheer:)

Ornstein: Piano Quintet and String Quartet No. 3

Simply ravishing both works. This composer should be better known apart from the fact that he lived more than 100 years!

+1 for the epic Piano Quintet, of course! I tried the SQ no. 3 a while back and found it quite disappointing compared to the quintet, but maybe that's just me.

One of my favorite discs ever!! Two stunning PCs which can easily stand comparison with the famous "warhorses" of the repertoire.

Agreed. You should check their solo piano music too. Very good stuff.

Henze, Symphony No 5

I forgot that I was had a little project of listening to the Henze symphonies a few years ago which I didn't complete. Listened to the fifth symphony today, in Henze's own recording and in the Janowski recording. I found it more difficult to absorb than some other works by Henze. The Janowski recording benefited from more opulent sound, the Henze recording was more focused. I will have to return to it at some point.

I tried Henze's 2nd Symphony a few weeks ago, and let's just say it didn't compel me to explore his output any further... ::) His style is pretty much the antithesis of my musical tastes.

Yeah, I'll need to explore that area of their outputs in greater detail. I've tried one of Sauer's piano sonatas and it was quite lovely.

Haydn: Symphony No. 86
Penderecki: Symphony No. 6 (or real 8th?) Chinese Songs

I found this coupling a winning combination.

Variety truly is the spice of life! :D

There's an Oleg Marshev series on Dacapo (of all labels) with lots of Sauer's piano music, five discs IIRC.  ;)
