The new erato

Brahms by the Dudok Quartet, thanks to somebody here alerting me to this:

Vaughan Williams: Four Hymns for tenor, solo viola and strings.
This is one of my favourite VW CDs
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Mahler: Kindertotenlieder [Von Otter/Boulez]

Von Otter's excessive vibrato is simply just not for me! Otherwise, the atmosphere, tone and  mood of this presentation is very appropriate and engaging.

Operafreak

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5/Tchaikovsky: The Voyevoda, symphonic ballad Op. 78

Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Neeme Järvi
The true adversary will inspire you with boundless courage.

I wonder did she realise that she was about to be immortalised when she posed for that painting?

I like all of Arnold's symphonies, but my favorites remain the 4th, 7th and 9th. Probably his darkest, most turbulent symphonies.

Usually turbulence, darkness and angst draw me in more than music that is more serene, pastoral or easier listening. I love all of Arnold's symphonies but am increasingly taken with 1- 3, 5 and 6.
"A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people ... then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbour — such is my idea of happiness"

Vaughan Williams: Four Hymns for tenor, solo viola and strings.
This is one of my favourite VW CDs

Just been listening to Four Hymns from Nicky Spence (tenor) with Julius Drake (piano) & Timothy Ridout (viola). I was impressed by Nicky Spence in the recent disc of RVW Folk Songs and so bought the new album despite already having several Wenlocks. Excellent performance.

Hindemith: Mathis Der Maler [Hindemith]

This is a work and a sound world that I like. It encompasses a wonderful sense of tension, drama and excitement. It also has a wonderfully inherent sense of forward momentum.

Not a bad work, Fergus.  ;D

Yes, he did OK with that one.  ;)

I am thinking, at this stage, that I prefer the St. John Passion to the St. Matthew Passion.
However, these things do change.

Janacek: String Quartet No. 2 [Gabrieli String Quartet]

This work is essentially and inherently very passionate, emotionally powerful, dramatic and atmospheric. All of these aspects of this work are delivered in spades here by the Gabrielis. This is really a very powerful performance and interpretation of this wonderful work. Although emotional and animated, this is still, essentially, a work that is conversational in nature and this element is very successfully delivered here. Please listen to this work if you have not yet heard it. It is a very powerful and emotional work and this is a particularly fine presentation of the work.
