Today is going to be a Martinů day (or, at least, a good portion of my listening will be).

Now playing Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 from the Neumann cycle:

I had to stop around the 2nd symphony as I just couldn't take the subpar audio quality --- I'll just wait for the older issues to come before diving back into this Neumann cycle (which I know I'll love once I've heard it in its proper sound).

Vaughan Williams: Symphony No.5 LSO Bryden Thomson
Having been thrilled to hear this live last Sunday I've been sampling some CDs which I haven't played for ages.
Thomson's is one of the best I think. I heard the work in a church and this performance was recorded in a church and I like the depth of the slightly cavernous sound, which I think suits the work. I will give this CD to my wife as it features two of the four works which we heard in the concert:

I read with great interest your thoughts on a concert of RVW 5th and subsequently listening to Marriner's recording of the work. I am tempted by Marriner as although Previn will never be displaced as first choice with such an important work it is wrong to ignore other options. Just to be different I haven't gone for Marriner but instead, Menuhin. Two advantages, very cheap and purchased from a favourite seller, York Records.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

Vaughan Williams: Symphony No.5 BBC SO, Boult
Just arrived (5 minutes ago). It sounds like a wonderful performance, rather sibelian and urgent - very moving. Having heard this work live in concert last Sunday makes this even more special for me. On the basis of the first few minutes I can honestly say that I have never been gripped as much as I have by this recording:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

That's quite the ringing endorsement, Jeffrey. There are so many fine performances of this symphony. Better than Previn/LSO? Hmmm....I'll have get this recording.

There's more than one Mravinsky recording of Shostakovich's 5th around, but this 1984 recording is the only on in stereo. There's a little audience noise, but the performance is phenomenal.

Yeah, all of these Martinů Praga recordings are top-notch and this one is no exception. I actually prefer their mixed ensemble cycle of the SQs to the Panochas on Supraphon.

Now playing this entire Braga Santos CD:

Pounds the table! Love that CD!

The cover art doesn't do much justice. The cover art of dark castle you made a few years ago would be super super better!

Martinů: Sinfonietta Giocosa
Jacobson, Vasary: Bournemouth Sinfonietta

The music is very busy, but the more I listened, the more I enjoyed it.

Well, thanks and I do agree that the cover art isn't flattering at all. Since it's Harnasie and the 4th symphony on this recording, I think a painting of an eerie mountainous landscape would've been more appropriate.
