I do love these symphonies so much. Really early start today with coffee, book and headphones while my sweet wife took a slower beginning. Mucho Tubin in the garden sunshine.

Wishing you all a happy Saturday, wherever you are and whatever you are doing!

An excellent way to start the day.

And my best wishes for you too!

This wonderful disc of choral music by Goffredo Petrassi:

Coro di morti is surely one of Petrassi's greatest works, and ranks very high among 20th century Italian choral music (along such masterpieces as Dallapiccola's Canti di priogionia and Nono's Il canto sospeso). Really great stuff.

Carlo Gesualdo

When I want to indulge myself, these overtures don't fail to deliver the goods:

Magnificent music!

This recording had a LOT of swagger, particularly the 9th. If Schubert played this way is wrong, I don't want to be right!

I also don't think I know a lot of Münch-led recordings outside of the French orchestral repertoire. I would be interested to explore more.

In addition to this wonderful Schubert, Munch recorded some great Mendelssohn (Symphonies 4 & 5), Tchaikovsky (Symphony 6), Dvorak (Symphony 8 ), Beethoven (a great 9th) and Brahms (Symphony No. 4 on RCA and No. 1 on EMI), as well as unusual items like the Martinu Symphony No. 6.

Khachaturian can be extremely excitlng and tuneful as no one else. Three suites of glorious music. What's not to love?

I agree! I love Khachaturian! His orchestral, chamber and solo music are top-notch. People tend to overlook his chamber and solo piano music. This, IMHO, is a big mistake.

I'm aware of a Simax CD of chamber music. Very fine it is.

Yep, that's the one I own and, indeed, a great recording. You should check out his solo piano music (if you haven't already).

Prokofiev: Suite from Semyon Kotko

Simply astonishing. The whole opera looks more than promising. Prokofiev at the height of his creative powers.

I agree. I haven't taken the Prokofiev opera plunge yet even though I have the Gergiev Decca set lying around. I won't be listening to any of Prokofiev's operas, however, until I've given another listen to Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk.

First listen to Messiaen - Harawi (Chant D'amour Et De Mort). I'm enjoying these songs for soprano and piano, like the varied rhythms.
