Now playing Kabalevsky Piano Concerto No. 4, Op. 99 with Yuri Popov and the composer at the helm conducting the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra:

Linz

Sarah Chang, Leif Ove Andsnes - Colin Davis, LSO in Dvorak Violin Concerto and the Piano Quintet in A major, op.81

Spotted Horses

Listened to the third (slow) movement of Casella's second symphony, La Vecchia.

Very dramatic, overheated romanticism. Nicely done.

Need a break before going to the long finale, so switched to a palette cleanser, Mozart Divertimento No 1, KV113, Marriner.

Pleasant enough, could have used a performance with a bit more panache. I have a few other choices on the shelves (Harnoncourt, Vegh) maybe I should switch over.

Interesting combination of symphonies David. Segerstam is very good in Pettersson.

Yes it is too bad that Segerstam recorded so few of the symphonies, he definitely has a great affinity with the music.

Nice!

I thought it was fantastic to begin with, but I think the work lost a lot of steam as it progressed. I'll give a C- rating --- not top-tier Kabalevsky for me.

Now playing Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, Op. 61 with Jean-Jacques Kantorow and Kees Bakels conducting the Tapiola Sinfonietta:

Elgar: 1st Symphony.

Great conductor of Czech music and it seems Mackerras can turn his hand to Elgar too. Not at all like my reference (Boult) but a refreshing alternative. 2nd and others under the Mackerras baton which I look forward to exploring.

Concerto for Two Pianos
Sonata for Two Pianos K. 448
Concerto for Three Pianos

Superb performances of these splendid and rather underrated works. SOTA sound. Highly recommended.

The Concerto for 2 Pianos is just lovely. Mozart was often at the peak of his inspiration when writing in the key of E-flat major, IMO.
