The name of the performing group--Hyperion Ensemble--is a bit amusing, since this version of Metamorphosen was recorded by the Nash Ensemble for the Hyperion label.

Schmid is not an obscure german Baroque composer, rather an obscure contemporary of Arnold Schönberg (1874-1953). The cover art curiously foreshadows the disc's contents. It is well-crafted but rather monochrome and unsmiling. The programme is a good one, with a welcome variety of forms and instruments. Not every composer could pull off an interesting viola/piano sonata (an ungrateful combination, I think) and Schmid is not among that short list. This is quite beyond off-the-beaten path music, more like deep-in-the-thickets stuff. Interesting but uninvolving. Available on Spotify.

Absolutely agree - isn't this the concerto with the rare use of an orchestral flexitone!?  Helped in no small part by Jarvi/SNO/Chandos in their pomp.  So many excellent discs from that combination back in the day.

I recently bought this Khatchaturian twofer;

which is a real thrill ride.  The Symphony No.1 is not the best - a live recording roughly played and recorded but everything else wears its Soviet heritage with pride.  I know what you mean about the "pops" from Spartacus and Gayeneh overshadowing other works BUT when you hear them played as here I dare you not to smile!!

Yep, this concerto has the flexitone. I wasn't sure what it was when I first heard the years ago, but it's a cool effect. I agree with you about those Khachaturian-led recordings. They are really something special. I own this box set, which I believe collects most of his recordings on Melodiya:

RS - which is your favourite version of Symphony No.1? Mine is Tjeknavorian with the LSO (RCA) but it has never been released on CD. His ASV version was disappointing by comparison.

I believe this Phono Suecia issue is the only all-Karkoff disc ever released. Some of his works have found their way on instrumental or chamber music compilations. The current disc includes 3 works for orchestra, all conducted by Leig Segerstam, as well as a brass quintet piece, a violin and piano and a solo flute piece. None of it is memorable, although 2 of the orchestral ones display a flair for dreamy atmosphere. Quite forgettable stuff IMO.
