Composed between the 4th and 5th Symphonies, Manfred never achieved the success of either, let alone the 6th, and is one of those works Tchaikovsky had ambivalent atttudes towards, at one time thinking it his best symphonic work, and not long after "an abominable piece". Perhaps this is the reason for its comparative neglect, but in a performance suc as this, it is hard to understand it. This may be a bargain release, but it is definitely not a bargain basement performance, with the RLPO in excellent form and Petrenko giving us a thrilling performance.


The rarely performed The Voyevode makes an excellent coupling.

I'm about to put on the DVD version of Symphony No.9. A very meditative close to the evening awaits (though to be honest, I'm not entirely certain I can just sit there watching a symphony performance).

Quote possibly. Another thing I've noticed is that prices tend to go up and down, seemingly randomly, which I suspect is intended to prompt people who hold an item in their shopping cart to pull the trigger.

What I've sometimes wondered is if Amazon is showing different prices to different users (perhaps showing lower prices to customers their algorithm has identified as cheap skates, and higher prices to profligate spenders). That's what I would do.

I had resolved to spring for The Netherlands Wind Ensemble version, then looked in my amazon shopping cart and saw that the price has gone up 30% since yesterday. That puts a damper on it!

I bought mine at Presto it has still the same price.maybe there is a shortage at the moment ?
