Alwyn: Sinfonietta for Strings - London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Hickox
That was written for the Music Dept of my old university - Lancaster.

Charming and delightful music. Right up my alley. Major discovery.

Braga Santos
Sinfonietta for Strings

A terrific piece. I heard it the other day and wow, late Braga Santos can be even more impressive than the more folksy one.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Beethoven: Cello Sonata No. 2

My favorite recording of these works. These early sonatas contain such fine music.

Haitink Mahler 7 in London in 2014. Someone here put me on to this years ago, for its chamber music quality. Remarkable line in the first movement, a single fluid trajectory from start to end.

Excellent mono sound. Young Pears. What's not to like?!

My favorite recording of one of my favorite works

Haydn: Symphony #31 "Hornsignal"
Mackerras: St. Luke's

I was most impressed by Variation 6 of the final movement. The use of the whole orchestra sounds almost Romantic! The rest of the finale also shows off every principal player. Unfortunately, this performance plays the repeats during the DC of the minuet and trio. I don't want to hear exactly the same thing four times.

From the Complete Peter Serkin set

It's narration spoken over or with music, to which I'm generally allergic.
But interesting for at least one hearing.
Not mentioned on the cover
Andras Adorjan flute/piccolo
Deborah Marshall clarinet/bass clarinet
William Purvis French horn
David Taylor Trombone
Stefan Hüge percussion
The composer conducts.

The cover art does suggest something "cloying".

Lajtha: Overture 'Lysistrata'

Colourful aplenty, significantly entertaining, but I expected more melodic elaboration.

First impressions? Europa has Hyperion on sale this week so I will admit to curiosity. The Ries symphonies and piano concertos are interesting enough in a derivative fake Beethoven kind of way. I like the odd instrument combinations here.
