More SQs, but from the other shore of the Atlantic: The Juilliard String Quartet play Elliott Carter's Second and William Schuman's Third (the latter will be new to me).

J.S. Bach.

Solo & Double Violin Concertos.

In D minor and D minor, for Two violins. BWV 1043 & 1060.
A minor, & E major for Violin, BWV 1041 & 1042.

Andrew Manze & Rachel Podger, Violins.
The Academy of Ancient Music, Andrew Manze.

Last played in 1997, so I start afresh. An Orchestra that sounds big, a broad spectrum. And two soloists of undisputed excellence. A balm for my ears. Not a rugged but rather an elegant performance. The pleasure is oozing in torrents from this recording. Tempi strike me as on the dot, expression is warm but never overdone. One can simply take no offence, all is highly approachable and soft grained.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Haydn op.76/6 in E flat major

Very satisfying.

Can we just pause for a moment and consider how it is that a Haydn work in E flat major has a 2nd movement in B major? The Romantics didn't invent this kind of thing.

Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Gustav Mahler: Rückert-Lieder. Christa Ludwig, Herbert von Karajan, Berlin Philharmonic

What an amazing recording.

Sibelius - Romance in C major for strings

Gorgeous little piece that is not yet in my CD collection anywhere, even though it's been recorded quite a lot of times as an album filler. Clearly I need a version of it. This album does not otherwise have repertoire that I particularly need but I might give it a full listen on streaming anyway.
Very much worth a full listen on streaming - Finley is great and the orchestrations by Rautavaara are as much of an attraction as the original works.

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No.3 in F major, op.90. Marin Alsop, London Philharmonic Orchestra

All I want to hear lately is Brahms and (especially) Mahler. This is a stellar performance of this beautiful symphony. I think I've heard Brahms' 4 symphonies more than anyone else's. Constant companion these past few years since I've been into classical music.

Benedikt Anton Aufschnaiter.

Serenades from "Concors discordia" Nuremberg, 1695.

Serenade No. 1-6.
L'Orfeo Barockorchester, Michi Gaigg.

My last listen was in 2006, and as with so many others I quite forgot what fine music is played here. The title of the music and the meaning escaped me.
Two musical worlds, France and Italy. In appearance overall France, influenced by Muffat no doubt, in fact it could be said that Aufschnaiter is Muffat's natural heir, which means in effect that the music is worthwhile, engaging, fresh in expression, and quite well composed. It gets a marvelous performance by this orchestra, in very good sound.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
