Some Cristóbal Halffter today...

First, Cadencia for solo piano. This was written as a bravura piece in 1983 for the Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition.



Followed by the Concierto para piano y orquesta.



This concerto, technically the composer's second for piano (AFAIK, an earlier piece from 1953 was withdrawn from the catalogue), is a 1987 expansion for piano and orchestra of the solo Cadencia. Both pieces are pure avant-garde C. Halffter (no quotations of older music here) and are both magnificent compositions. I am struck by how "pianistic" the solo piece and the soloist's part (in the concerto) are, taking full advantage of the possibilities the instrument offers, and how accomplished the orchestration of the concerto is (C. Halffter really knew how to get the most out of a huge orchestra).

The pianist in both pieces is the composer wife, María Manuela Caro, and she's superb.

The more I listen to Livre pour quatuor, the more I like it. It's not an easy piece by any means, but it does offer some fascinating insights into the workplace of the SQ as a genre. This 2000 recording by the Quatuor Parisii is of the state in which the score was in 1962, and therefore does not incorporate the final revisions (from around 2012) that were used by the Quatuor Diotima in their recording, or the reconstruction of section IV made by Philippe Manoury after Boulez's death (section IV is absent from both the Parisii and the Diotima recordings).
